The Google Nexus 4 Review

Google is consistently releasing new versions of Android under the Nexus brand. Typically, they employ different manufacturers such as Samsung and Motorola to produce these Nexus devices. That way, each Nexus device has its own character.

The latest Nexus smartphone, the Nexus 4, is manufactured by LG. This is their first time to make a Nexus device.

nexus 4

Like any other Nexus smartphone, it’s comprised of premium hardware. The first thing you’ll like about this phone is the 4.7 – inch IPS Plus LCD screen with a resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 2, a new and improved version of the Gorilla Glass used in previous high – end smartphones. It also has a 1.5 GHz quad – core Snapdragon S4 processor. There’s also 2 GB of RAM with an Adreno 320 GPU.

In terms of storage, you get to choose between 8 GB or 16 GB of space and the phone comes fully unlocked.

But what makes the Nexus 4 an impressive smartphone? The latest version of Android, of course. This year, we get Android 4.2.

Android 4.2

Android 4.2 is basically Ice Cream Sandwich with minor updates to the interface.

The software still contains the key features that make Android a powerful platform. You can add widgets whatever way you like. There’s plenty of apps you can buy or download for free.

When surfing the Internet, the great thing about Android 4.2 is that it now comes with Chrome as the default browser. If you’re not a fan of Chrome, you can always download other web browsers such as Firefox.

Camera

The Nexus 4 takes amazing pictures. The main camera has 8 megapixels, while the front camera has 1.3 megapixels.

Thanks to the powerful processor, the speed of taking shots is significantly reduced. You can quickly access it from the lock screen too, which is really nice.

In terms of picture quality, the main camera can stand up with the best. If you’re in a place with good lighting, then you’ll get amazing pictures

The video quality of the camera is also impressive. It shoots in 1080p as the default resolution. There’s also 720p and 480p to save on storage.

Other Features

The Nexus 4 is filled with plenty of other features you can expect from a top quality smartphone. For example, there’s a document editor. You also get the usual suite of Google Apps such as YouTube, Calendar, Google Talk and a host of others.

The battery provides up to 15 hours of talk time. Standby time is 390 hours, which is plenty.

In terms of dimensions, the phone is very thin. In fact, it’s just 0.36 inches thick. The phone is also 5.27 inches tall and 2.70 inches wide. It fits very nicely into your pocket, since the form is very similar to previous Nexus phones.

Conclusion

Probably the only downside to this phone is that it doesn’t have 4G LTE. Why is that? Google wants the phone to appeal to a bigger market, not just in the United States. This can potentially help resolve any issues when using cellular data on other continents like the Europe and Asia.

How much is the phone off – contract anyway? You’ll be happy to know that the phone sells for 300 bucks outright. Google definitely wants this phone to appeal to a massive audience.

If you want a phone with wonderful specs at a nice price, this could be the phone for you. If you’re looking for a wonderful Android experience without any embellishments, then a Nexus phone is the way to go.

Only time will tell if the smartphone is a true hit.

I like the simple overview of this device – most of the reviews seem to focus on the tech specs so this is fresh change. It’s a shame they left out LTE, especially given many carriers will be focussing on this element in 2013.
