We all love our homes, and we love technology. Technology can make our lives easier, more comfortable and save us money if we use it right. Lately there has been a ton of innovation. With technological additions we can add to our homes to decrease the amount of energy we use, solve common problems, and have more control over our home. Here’s a look at some of the best ideas out there.
This handy device will cut down on appliances sipping energy while they are turned off but still plugged in by blocking the flow of electricity completely. The software will also let you monitor and cut power remotely from a smartphone, such as when you left for vacation and left the flat screen TV on. You’ll be saved a trip back home and save on your energy bill as well.
2. Mint Plus Automatic Floor Cleaner
Rather than wandering around haphazardly like other automatic vacuum cleaners, this vacuum uses an infrared beam on the ceiling to triangulate its location and then sweeps or mops in neat rows. Its square shape even allows it to get in the corners.
3. Aeroseal Duct Sealant
You know those pesky leaks in your heating and cooling duct that are impossible to get to? This magic leak-plugger uses a vinyl-acetate-polymer mist to fill in gaps that are as wide as your thumb and just like that, no more leaks.
4. Automated Light Switch
Home automation has come a long way. Companies like Vivint review the industry to offer the latest tech that is a spectacular addition to any home. Now all of your lights can be set up to be programmed by your phone. Some systems allow you to create certain settings, such as romantic, watch a movie, or sleep, and the lights will automatically be set to your preferred settings. It’s also great for turning the lights off if you forgot, or turning them on while you are on vacation to give potential burglars the impression you are at home.
5. Transparent TV
What could be the crown jewel to any man cave/ bachelor pad, or family room, the transparent TV combines conventional LCD and TOLED display technology to allow you to either leave the TV transparent to see the wall behind it, or it can hold solid moving pictures to cater to your personality.
6. Smart Thermostat
Do you forget to turn the heater down before you go to work or turn up the air conditioner before leaving for vacation? A smart thermostat will remember for you. There are various types available, but the basic idea is you tell the system when to adjust the temperature, and it does it on its own. Some will let you program a schedule for every day of the week while the less expensive ones do one schedule for weekdays and a different schedule for the weekend.
7. Automatic Shades
Wouldn’t it be nice for the shades to raise up on their own in the morning, so you can wake up to the sunshine. There is a lot of technology out there now that will do just that. Some are individual systems that use the sun to signal when to raise and lower. Others are part of a home automation system that you can program and control from a smartphone or tablet.

The Mint Automatic Floor Cleaner looks really nice. I’ve had a couple of robotic vacuums and they get things done without me having to ‘work’ through each of the sections of my house.
