How You Can Protect Your Identity When Gambling Online

With more and more of our daily lives taking place in cyberspace, it’s no surprise that the popularity of online casinos has grown exponentially in recent years. Unfortunately, the number of unscrupulous actors taking advantage of poor cybersecurity protocols to steal people’s sensitive data has also risen sharply. According to fraud prevention experts CIFAS, the number of identity fraud cases in the UK shot up by almost a third over the last five years.

Having said that, concerns about the security of your data and your identity online should not prevent you from enjoying your favourite casino games. All that’s required is a little care and forethought to ensure you stay safe online. With that in mind, the following tips are a great starting point for keeping hackers at bay.

Use a reputable casino

In order to ensure your data is kept safe and secure, it’s advisable to use a reputable casino with a proven track record of robust cyber security measures. One good rule of thumb from which you can judge a casino is the number of years it has been in business; generally speaking, the longer a casino has been operational, the more trustworthy it will be. You can also read user reviews online and dig into the casino’s past to see if it has a history of identity fraud associated with it.

Stay anonymous

While it’s nigh on impossible to stay anonymous online in today’s modern world, there are several things you can do to hide your identity as best you possibly can. These include using a virtual private network (VPN), turning off location tracking, prohibiting apps from collecting personal data that isn’t essential to their functioning and using cryptocurrencies to deposit money into your account, where applicable. These precautions can help to obscure your location and your identity, making it that much harder for the hackers.

Use a strong password

It might sound obvious, but the number of people who use a password that can be easily guessed – even by people who don’t know them at all – is staggering. Instead of using something predictable like your date of birth or your favourite sports team, try to come up with a unique combination of letters, numbers and symbols that you won’t forget, but that could never be guessed by others. At the same time, it’s important that you don’t recycle passwords across different platforms. Doing so might be more convenient, but if a hacker gains access to it, they will basically have a skeleton key to all of your sensitive data.

Don’t share your login details

Last but not least, you should never share your login details with anyone. After all, there’s no point in dreaming up a complex and uncrackable password if you’re going to simply volunteer that information to others! This includes friends, family and even the customer service team of the casino in question since a hacker could be posing as one of their staff in order to dupe you into divulging your login credentials. Don’t write them down, either, since a paper copy can always fall into the wrong hands. Commit them to memory instead.
