How Will S4 Help Samsung Beat Apple?

In an ever changing world of mobile phones, people are getting harder to please. With innovations and patented technologies presented hot to consumers, we are living in an age where the bar is raised so high, that innovators themselves are finding it hard to quench thirst of the consumers. One can only hope of holding consumer attention for a while, let alone keeping them hooked for a life time.

Just less than an year after the London launch of Galaxy S3, all eyes are now set on the unveiling of the new Galaxy S4, Samsung’s successor to its flagship phone. Samsung loyalists have huge hopes from this phone and will leave no stone upturned to heap praises on its launch and induct it into the ‘Hall of Fame’. But with details kept under the wraps, how sure can we be that the S4 will match expectations from enthusiasts and top charts with Apple in close line? How will Samsung target S4 prices to stay ahead of its competitors?

Providing A Good Ecosystem

The one thing that Apple has and Samsung doesn’t is a strong ecosystem (Store for Apps) that is smooth, well-knit and doesn’t leave the user confused. All Apple devices are connected to the iTunes and the iStore online and therefore it is easy to bring updates and new features to them. Samsung would do itself a world of good if it offered its users a clear and more integrated ecosystem, to win over its contenders’ fans. The Samsung ecosystem has a jumble of comparatively weak store fronts called ‘hubs’ and badly named cloud storage system called “All share” that instantly puts off, if not, lets down its users.  Almost everyone (including the Execs in Samsung) admit that the Apple ecosystem is way superior to Samsung’s.

Sleeker Hardware

One complaint that many users have with Samsung phones is that, it feels plastic-y. While iPhone 5 was dubbed the world’s most durable smartphone, with the entire body finished with metal instead of glass, which also made it much lighter, Samsung’s Galaxy S3 came with a plastic-back. While mobile companies have moved on to complex, sturdy and more feel-friendly material for their cases, Samsung still vouches for the plastic finish. According to Samsung officials, it helps them keep costs low and also speed up manufacturing. Samsung fans like to defend this fixation by deeming it as a convenience measure and yes may be, because of the plastic backing the battery is removable, but still, for the price one will pay for S4, the phone can definitely do with a little more finesse.

Usefulness vs Looks

The balance between usefulness and looks is extremely crucial in the smartphone industry. Where on one hand you want to attract attention of potential customers, on the other you are also being judged for the ‘value for money’ you give your customer. So, if your pitch, boasting of a 13 mega pixel rear camera, a 2 GB RAM, or an eight core processor may attract a tech-junkie, you might be losing out someone who is just looking for a smartphone he can use. The S3 was a great example, where Samsung introduced a bunch of tricks like the Smart Stay (which wasn’t that bad) or Share Shot etc. Even Apple’s features such as FaceTime and Siri, for that matter, have shown a lot of promise. We can only wait and watch what the S4 has to offer.

The S3 set up a new high for Android based phones and has so far been one of the hottest selling phones in the market. With Apple devotees vouching that the S3 would fall flat on its face, Samsung managed to capture global attention and even went a step ahead to challenge the supremacy of Apple Inc. in the smartphone market. What this taught the tech world was that Samsung too had a few tricks up its sleeves and could not be undermined. With last year dotted with patent battles, technology wars and competition to reign as number one, we are truly enjoying the two biggest mobile giants battling it out. How will S4 help Samsung beat Apple? We will only know once it is launched.

I honestly don’t understand the appeal for these Samsung phones. I understand wanting to avoid Apple, but what’s so great about Samsung? In my estimation, they make some pretty generic looking phones made of cheap looking light plastic. IMO, HTC makes better phones…and, of course, Nokia. I like Samsung’s TVs and some of their other products, but I just don’t think they make quality hardware when it comes to phones.

I am looking forward to this phone. It has awesome features like all the eye tracking and the camera effects. You don’t even need Photoshop after using this phone. Browsing the web has never been easier – only using your eyes. It’s loads of fun. Don’t know what Apple will do, but I doubt it will be better. Here is my article about the Samsung Galaxy S4
