How to Set Up a Smart Home Security System

Are you looking to beef up your home security system? Protecting your home and family against crime and theft is always a worthwhile investment. Home security includes safeguards such as motion detectors, locks, alarm systems, doors, security camera systems, and lighting.

With today’s Internet of Things (IoT), you can have a smart home security plan. With all your devices on one network, you can access your video feed or light switches from your smartphone or laptop, anywhere and at any time. This has increased the preference for smart home security systems over traditional ones.

If you haven’t upgraded your home security plan to a smart one, you shouldn’t worry about how to do it. This article offers steps that you can use when setting up a smart home security plan. Keep reading to learn more.

Steps To Follow When Setting Up A Smart Home Security Plan

You’ve installed the right mechanisms like door locks, window latches, and lock hasp and padlocks for your storage. How do you take it to the next level? Here are steps to guide you when setting up smart home security.

1.  Start By Getting A Great Internet Connection

Smart home security is powered by the internet. For example, a security camera that records HD quality can use up to 2 Mbps. Therefore, the first thing you should consider when setting up a smart home security plan is to have an excellent internet connection.

An excellent internet connection allows you to run your home security hardware smoothly. For instance, you can respond to security emergencies without delays. Also, if you need to communicate security instructions with someone in your home when you’re away, you need good internet for efficient communication.

2. Next, Choose Video Doorbells

Studies show that 34% of thieves break into your home through your front door and 22% through your back door. Since these are critical security points in your home, it’s smart to install video doorbells.

Video doorbells have hidden cameras that record anyone who accesses your home through your doors. They are also equipped with motion detectors, which means they can sense someone approaching your doors when it’s dark. All the footage recorded by video doorbells is stored in your cloud account. Therefore, you can watch the clips anytime you want. Also, if there’s a break-in, you can easily share the clips with the police.

3. Proceed To Install Smart Cameras

Smart cameras are the most common smart security hardware used. You can connect these cameras to your phone so that you can be aware of what’s happening in your home even when you aren’t around. Apart from that, you can adjust them based on factors such as if you have pets and where you live. For example, if you live near the main road, there’s a lot of motion. Therefore, you can adjust your smart camera to sense motions close to the house instead of capturing those on the road.

Further, you can adjust light pattern changes that should raise the alarm. For example, an alarm can go off if shadows cause a light pattern change. Therefore, you need to adjust your security system to avoid unnecessary alarms.

You may wonder what the difference between smart cameras and video doorbells is if both sense motions and record video footage. Smart cameras are more advanced because they have better resolution video, built-in sirens, better night vision, and automatic floodlights.

4.     Add Smart Keyless Locks

With advanced technology, you don’t need keys to access your home. Instead, you can add smart keyless locks that use codes instead of tangible keys. These smart keyless locks are better than other smart locks because:

  • You don’t have to worry about misplacing your keys.
  • You can use them together with the analog locking system.
  • You can let people in without opening the door by giving them your security code. You can also have trusted people come over when you’re not around.
  • You can set when the doors should lock themselves. For instance, you can set a time frame of 3 minutes after opening for the smart locks to secure the doors. Also, if you forget to lock your doors after leaving, smart locks can sense the distance difference and lock your doors.

5. Remember To Get Smart Smoke Alarms And Have Them Installed

Theft isn’t the only security issue you should be concerned about. It would be best if you had security measures for fire put in place. Fires may damage your home and property more than what thugs can do to your home. One of the best ways to secure your home against fire is by installing smart smoke alarms.

Smart smoke alarms detect carbon monoxide emissions, flaming fires, and smolders. When they detect those, an alarm goes off, notifying you of a possible fire emergency in your home. Some advanced smart smoke alarms allow you to pair them with your home security alarm system. If smoke is detected, a firefighting company can be dispatched to your home after your alarm goes off.

Smoke alarms using batteries may be an issue of concern in case they die and you forget to replace them. However, it would help if you didn’t worry because every smart smoke alarm notifies you when the batteries are almost dying.

6. Last But Not Least, Have Smart Lights Instead Of The Normal Lights

If you’re a person who travels more often and you’re concerned about your home’s security, smart lights should be among your top priority. Smart lights allow you to control your home lighting no matter where you are. With this feature, you can have lights to have people think you’re home when you’re away.

Moreover, you can set your lights to go on when any motion is detected at night. This will increase your home’s security as intruders fear breaking in when lights go on after sensing movements.

Wrapping It Up!

The increased number of home break-in cases has increased the demand for home security plans. With technological advancements, you can incorporate various smart security features into your home security plan. These features include video doorbells, smart cameras, keyless locks, smoke alarms, and smart lights. What’s more, you should note that you need a great internet connection for an effective smart home security plan. Setting up a smart home control may seem challenging, especially if you do not know where to begin. Let this article serve as your guide.
