Blizzard Entertainment has finally released the long-awaited real-time strategy game (RTS), StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty after 12 years of waiting and 7 years in development. This release is a follow-up of the original StarCraft game that was launched in 1988, which puts a player in control of a group of humans fighting for survival against an insect horde and telepathic aliens.
The 12 years gap between the sequels is seen as the longest ever and is quite surprising especially after the great success of the first edition (which sold over over 9 million copies). Star Craft II maintains most aspects of the original (such as the three races – Protoss, Zerg and Terrans) although Blizzard has made some changes “in the way units are upgraded and altered, and improved the way they interact with the in-game environments”. The game is split into 3 instalments: the base game subtitled Wings of Liberty, and two expansion packs – Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void.
It is not yet known how successful Star craft II will become especially because there was no review before it went on sale at midnight of 27 July 2010. However, enthusiastic fans can be pardoned for having very high expectations particularly after waiting 12 years for the sequel.

Star Craft is a nice game, but most of the people who have play the game before we have forgot it. They are welcome back to the market.

I remember playing this when it first came out. Doesn’t feel like 12 years ago. Time does go fast.
Look forward to trying the sequel.

Ooooo, yeah, I remember the first part too.
My friend had a gamers bar, and when all the people cleared out we stepped in!
4 computers for 4 players. I probably do not have to mention that we always stayed up all night with it. 🙂
I’ll see to purchase the new one too, but I first have to be a bit careful, because I do not want to stay up all night…. hehe!

It’s been a year already and i have to say that starcraft 2 was a success. It sold 721,000 units in just a few months and it only took 24 hours to become the best-selling PC game of the year.
