Choosing Between Tablets and Laptops

Doing business always concerns going to an office every morning and sitting on a desk all day. That was the old concept of doing business. Today, because of the advancements in technology, business owners can no longer be found in physical workplaces alone. A lot of small businesses now utilize the cloud for their transactions. Indeed, a number of small businesses are operating through virtual offices.

Maintaining a virtual office is cheaper and more manageable than having an actual office. This is usually the number one reason why business owners are the top buyers of gadgets which can be helpful in doing business even when on the go. From smartphones, to tablets and laptops, business owners always fill the lines up. However, not all of them are choosing wisely between the gadgets. Some only buy a tablet to be in the crowd but regret having one after a few weeks. Meanwhile, others choose laptops but are not fully satisfied.

Laptops and tablets have certain similarities especially when it comes to portability and ease of use but that does not mean that one can replace the other. In order to choose between these two, it is necessary to think over it and not simply buy on impulse. Below is a discussion of some guidelines when being torn between getting a tablet or a laptop.

First, know the strengths and weaknesses of each gadget. Tablets are a combination of lightweight, economical, long performance gadget. They are the ideal for sending and receiving emails and web browsing. They can also perform other tasks more comfortably than a laptop such as watching videos, gaming, playing music, and reading e-books. However, laptops are still best suited for work-related tasks including, but not limited to, making presentations, tracking expenses, and drafting documents. Many tablet apps lack the features of laptop applications. Moreover, every application in tablets usually comes at a cost unlike those of laptop applications which come in bulks.

Second, lay down your purposes of buying the device. Specifically list all the things that you want to do with a laptop or tablet. Do not simply write ‘emailing’. Instead, indicate the frequency of checking and sending emails. That way, you can easily determine which device you need the most. As you list, note which device is suited for each task. The device needed for most of your tasks is probably the one you badly needed for your day to day operations.

However, not because you have realized which one you need means that you have to buy it right there and then. You will end up spending a few bucks with something that you will outgrow sooner or late. You can even end up paying too much for features that were never useful to your transactions. Third thing you need to do is to determine your budget. How much are you willing to shell out for this business necessity? Have a separate budget for this and stick to it. You do not need to have the newest device in town. Keep in mind that usefulness should always be the first consideration.

Fourth thing you need to consider is the content. If you will use the laptop as your sole computer where you make and receive content, it is probably best if you get a tablet as well. That way, you can separate or create back-ups for your content in case your laptop gets ruined or stolen.

If I’d use the tablet for client presentations only, it would suffice, otherwise (for office work) I think a laptop is better.

Tablet is surely a better option if you need to travel a lot and have a mobile device around all the time. But modern laptops are more powerful so at work I prefer to use a laptop as it performs better.
