QUICK TIP: Understanding the Menu Module in Joomla

Bearbeitung von Benutzern

Although all Joomla sites have at least one menu module, it is quite easy to ignore the fact that the Main Menu is also a module particularly if you installed Joomla with the sample data that comes along with it. After creating a Menu and the relevant Menu Items, many Joomla newbies find it difficult to find the newly created menu. Exactly the same thing happened to a friend hence this short post/article. Please take note of the following: because the Main Menu is a module, it is necessary to remember that every single menu you create will also be accompanied by a menu module. The newly created menu should therefore be treated in the same way as other existing menus.

Once a menu module is created, it still needs to be to be activated and placed in a relevant module position so as to become active and visible on the Website. Therefore, to activate a newly created menu module, you simply need to select Extensions and then the Module Manager from the drop-down menu, in the back-end of your Joomla installation. Then find the menu module among the presented list of modules and enable it with the radio button (usually on the right). You should now select a position to display the module from the drop-down list of available Positions. This should make the newly created menu module visible from the front-end of your Joomla installation.

Hi Saika, I have tried to simplify the tutorial further. Basically, your newly created menu is a module therefore you need to find the Module Manager to enable it. Go through the tutorial again and let me know if you have further problems.

Well I know where I’ll be coming for my Joomla questions now. I’m a recent convert to Joomla. I’ve dabbled in Drupal and WordPress, but Joomla is far superior since there is so much more you can do with it. I’ll admit, coming from WordPress it was a bit of a headache, but with content like this blog I’m pretty confident that I can overcome any obstacles I may face. Thanks for your help!

Finally we have a great, clear tutorial on how to use Joomla. Once you get used to working with it, it’s not a very complex tool to use, but it’s really good to have a guideline to begin with. Thanks!

Very well said and that’s the main point.
Two of my sites run on Joomla and I never have problems because I don’t edit the codes, I leave modules as they are even if there are links inserted somewhere on any page.
I guess this post served its purpose well. Thanks.

I reckon that Joomla users may experience a longer learning curve to mastering its use compared to other platforms. It’s not that SEO friendly as well out of the box. There are also plugins that you can get from WP for free whereas with Joomla, you are gong to have to pay for it. May not be best suited for an average user.
