Your titles have to be unique and shouldn’t be repeated anywhere on your site because if they are, then the search engine’s would be confused when ranking your pages. Before you write your post titles, keep a list of keywords that are relevant to your site on hand which you can choose from. Your indexing process will be able go much more quickly if you choose to utilize a plug-in for generating your Google Sitemap listing. This enables Google to easily find all of your site’s pages. It is also important to ping your news to other websites whenever you add new content to your site. When your posts are linked back by another blogger, you get some targeted visitors. When you write some new content, if it has any bearing on earlier material, then link to it. This will keep older content active and also help new visitors. 18. It is necessary to add still that really sitemap for Google, Yahoo, Alexa and other search cars is very important, and for WordPress there is a special plug-in.
And about unique keywords-it already turns out specialisation under low-frequency inquiries. But after all is also mid-frequency, they too are very important!

  19. As well as detecting bad phrases, you may find some new good ones. For example, you may see that a keyword phrase you did not optimize your site for brings useful traffic despite the fact that your site is on the second or third page in search results for this phrase. Using this methods, you will arrive at a new refined set of keyword phrases.

  20. A sitemap really isn’t THAT important anymore nowadays. Put robots.txt in the root of your webdirectory and you’re good to go.

When it comes to SEO for WordPress, I always recommend the following:

    – install the SEO all in 1 pack. I know this has been said before, but it’s a very good plugin. Highly recommended.
    – mind the internal linkbuilding. Put links to other pages on popular pages.
    – watch the keyword density. Make sure your targeted keyword combination has a density between 2% and 5% in the text.

Good luck all and thanks for the article!

  21. Wonderful informations, Just what i was looking for, straight up info yet easy to undrestand, Thanks again for your effort, and i will go back for more

  22. Your style is care free, yet informative, expressive yet likable. You don’t push nor do you critize. You make your articles stand out and you help us to stand up… try using seo companies that provide the best services that will surely make your website reach the top rank.

  23. Hey, thanks for posting, great comments. Thanks for the useful information, wished that you had named that plugin that will help tie in the new blog post to the older ones. Time to do a Google search.

  24. I’ve consulted with a friend of mine that’s an SEO Reseller, and he recommends using WordPress. He said it’s efficient, simple, and will give you a great deal of control over the way you want to run your blog. They have an SEO add on that allows you to change the meta tags and URL in a snap, which is essential to good SEO practice. My SEO reseller friend said that they do SEO on alot of websites that are wordpress and the search engines find this cms platform very easy to navigate with their spiders. He said they have never seen any indexing issues due to the wordpress design and highly recommends the WordPress CMS for ease of use and high SEO performance.

    1. Combining SEO with your WordPress blog (or any other blog/site for that matter) is a must as far as I’m concerned. It may take an extra one or two minutes of your time after writing a post but its well worth it.

  25. I have some friends sees that wordpress can help everyone get good business through getting huge amount of projects through wordpress because of the CMS already installed and all they can do is deigns. That surely is one advantage every designer see’s as a good help.
I just remembered long time ago, its been a struggle find ways to optimize a blog but this days through WP it helped everything hard became easy. So thanks more specially to SEO all in one pack.

What I don’t like that much is the way new plug ins comes and you have to update your plug in or version and sometimes it creates trouble specially to those that don’t know that much. Though I know WP’s admin is looking into this. I just hope they will stay free 🙂

  26. WordPress has provided plug-ins that are both user-friendly and SEO friendly. A few that I can mention are Akismet and Cookies For Comments. Another thing that’s great about WordPress is that you don’t need too many plug-ins for it.

  27. Some hostile comments above. SEO is a necessary evil if you want to make it big on the web. Ther are no ways around it. Relying on paid ads exclusively is just too expensive.

Of course, my opinion is that free press release distribution sites (like ours) are the most effective ways at building links and bettering SEO.

  28. You really do need a sitemap. I just ran a google seo scan on a new blog and it kept hanging up because my sitemap was off. Your robot.txt in the root is also important for indexing. blogging seo can be harder than it needs to be if not done correct. With good seo it can go a long way t your blog/sites success. Keep bringing the good postings they are a great help Thank you

  29. I agree, the sitemap is very important for all of your pages to be indexed.

This is very true for pinging as well: whenever you make a new post you should ping it too.

You should submit you new post in a form of RSS feed to the major RSS agregators as well for the maximum exposure.
    .-= Devi´s last blog .."Elephant in the room…!!!" =-.

    1. Very good point Devi. I totally agree. I have always had good results in Websites where I used sitemaps and the use of RSS Feeds is another trick that must not be overlooked.

  30. WordPress is so dynamic and easy to use in comparison to other CMS or blogs. The plugin functionality is great and allows for flexibility when developing a template.

  31. I really appreciate all the great insights from this article. Site map is really helpful by the way.
Lots of great articles and easy to use menus. My hat is off to you. I am learning a lot. I will put a link to your site on my blog.

  32. That’s why i use wordpress for my blog platform, powerfull in seo and much more tools, awesome article, i like it.

  33. SEO is about 1. market research 2. keyword research 3. on page optimization 4. site structure 5. link building 6. brand building 7. viral marketing 8. adjusting 9. staying up to date

  34. I agree that even though wordpress makes it easy for people to do the right thing regarding SEO, there are still many steps needed to be taken to get to the next level. I think as you said a creation of a sitemap is an important yet often overlooked step when someone sets up a blog. It is so easy to create, yet people sit around and pray that their site gets picked up by the major search engines. Nice read by the way.

  35. I never understood why some WP themes include the blog title first in every post and some do not. I would think that it should be standard for SEO to include the post title first and have the blog title optional if anything. I guess not all WordPress theme developers have SEO on their mind.

I am trying out this plugin that fixes this issue called Optimal Title – http://elasticdog.com/2004/09/optimal-title/ hopefully it will work well. Does anyone know the SEO implication that changing all your titles in your blog can have with your SERPs?

  36. I love wordpress ever since I started using it. In fact, every website I build now are all under wordpress.

But what would you say about Drupal being threat to wordpress in terms of being presentable wise, content management, and now they say it’s even better SEO-wise.

I just hope wordpress stays the top choice, cause if it’s true Drupal is better, then it’s a big job learning that thing.

    1. With Drupal, you have to be a little more than an average developer. Now, I don’t see Drupal being a treat to WP because most bloggers have little or no programming experience and for those who belong in this category WP is very easy to work with.

    1. Apart from using WordPress as a blogging platform, some Web administrators also use it as a content management system. It really does depend on your requirements however when it’s not blogging I tend to prefer Joomla or just HTML+CSS.

  37. I am always amazed when I discover that many people who make use of WordPress do not actually know anything about WordPress SEO. They have basically no knowledge of the workings of the SEO tips and training that is imperative for their online success. I do not advise you to ignore that WordPress SEO training as you would be doing yourself more harm than good. Once you make a wonderful combination of SEO and WordPress, you would be amazed yourself at the possibilities that could result from such a combination. Trying to effectively tap into the wonders of SEO without using WordPress is essentially like trying to fill up a Jacuzzi with a basket.

    1. SEO-compliant template? That sounds like a bit of magic to me. At the end of the day its the amount of effort that you put in individually that matters.

  38. Great post, thanks for sharing this information. WordPress does seem to be the best platform for setting up a good website, very easy to work with.

  39. I had no idea about titles of posts having to be unique and not being repeated. I repeated them a couple of times on posts that I thought were related. Now I think it might not have been such a good idea! Everything else you said – no problem. 🙂

  40. Hey,good post, thanks for your share! and I want to know if i can use this text in my blog in case I put a link back to yours? Waiting for your comment!

  41. Thank you very much for this post it was very helpful. To reference your article you stated,”Your titles have to be unique and shouldn’t be repeated anywhere on your site because if they are, then the search engine’s would be confused when ranking your pages.” That is something that I know I have done, so thank you for the information; I will have to fix that right away.

  42. This is actually a pretty informative site, and I don’t say that for just any! I’m definitely going to be a regular reader. I’m looking to get into the Internet marketing industry (mainly SEO stuff), so every little bit helps! I’m definitely a fan of any web relate news and info. Cheers! =)

  43. What you have posted gives me a lot of information. I will be checking your blog sites regularly for more information. Keep it up!

  44. It was a very good article to read with many informations to learn. The best way to get indexed quick on Google is also to build backlinks in very known website like Squidoo, my website get indexed in less than 24 hours just with linkbuilding.
Also, All in one seo package is the best seo plugin for WordPress. <3

    1. Thanks for the comment on All in One SEO. I think I will take you up on that one. While I agree that it is indeed an excellent seo plugin, Platinum SEO does give All in One a run for its money!

  45. Thanks for the post, I like to find inspiring ideas and practical knowledge to help bolster my own awareness for web design and development in general. Blogs like yours are a great source of inspiration for me and I will keep an eye open (on your rss feed) for more of your brilliant posts. Cheers!

    1. I barely would say Google Sitemap is perfect tool for indexing. There are tons of holy war comments all over SEO forums and 100% decision to upload Sitemap on a regular basis or not isn’t given so far.

  46. An invaluable resource and great addition to my favorites. The new features are well received on this end and will

surely help the community share and progress more
    rapidly.

    1. I had no idea either Ive always seen that on peoples wp sites but never knew how to use it, thats a great find

  47. THANK YOU! 😀 I’ve just implemented this on my blog and it worked perfectly. I appreciate you sharing this advice.

  48. I can see these coming useful for a very stylish website, possibly my next hairstylist or fashion website!

    1. Getting the Sitemap index is a very good technique and linking back the old article will always help to multiply page views. But can you explain the on-page optimization?

      1. I think on-page optimisation focuses more on individual Web pages which involves using specific titles, descriptions, header tags and so on.

  49. This post was very nicely written, and it also contains a lot of useful facts.
I enjoyed your professional manner of writing the post. Thanks, you have made it easy for me to understand.

  50. Really interesting article, thanks. It covers the on-page aspects of SEO for blogging well. I found the benefits of choosing WordPress for your blog particularly useful.

  51. Thanks for yet another first-rate article. I am always searching for super WordPress tips to recommend to my own readers. Thank you for making this article. It’s exactly what I was searching for. Truly terrific post.

  52. I agree that the keywords matter. Title should say exactly what the post is about, users find it frustrating when they think a post is about what they are looking for, read the first paragraph and realize it is about something else.

  53. WP has a strong community support with several plugins. However, its not that fast if you have a lot of plugins installed. With Google recently considering page loading time, it could be a problem.

  54. Well there are many points which should be considered when it comes SEO, lately I noticed the SEO plugin for WordPress had introduced a feature called Canonical url.

The day when Google introduced this feature, many webmasters jumped in the race to use canonical url without understanding the purpose behind it. So the SEO plugin author had also included that in his plugin whereas the fact is 80% WordPress users don’t require it because Canonical url is meant for some other purpose.

    1. It is actually very important to understand plugins before installation, particular when it comes to managing your WordPress blog more efficiently.

  55. Besides having the utmost simplicity, the SEO aspect is top notch too.
    I really love WordPress. Period.

  56. Absolutely right! A blog is not a blog if it does not have keywords that can be used for the optimization.

  57. Love wordpress! It’s top notch from a SEO perspective. I used to make my websites in plain HTML a few years ago – those days are gone 🙂

  58. By putting the keyword in title we can get significat result, i love wordpress becoz it makes seo so easy

  59. We use WordPress for our site – it’s easily configurable and once you get to understand it, you can practically build any type of site with it. People say that it’s great for SEO, but the reality is that it’s easily configurable for GOOD seo, if you do the right things with the plugins (like All In One SEO)

    1. Agree. Ease of use is definitely one of the most important advantages of using WP especially self-hosted.

  60. WordPress is really what many choose from all the platform available out there. It is important that you know the fields that you need to give enough attention to achieve high rankings. Thanks for your tips. These are really helpful.

  61. I think the All in One SEO Pack and the Google XML sitemap plugins are enough for your WordPress SEO needs.

But if you have the awesome Thesis Theme installed, then there’s no need for anything else.

    Thanks.

  62. When I asked my web guys to add a blog to my site, they said WordPress was the only way to go. Easy for me to add content (as a non-techie), the search engines love it and it is already built so it keeps costs low. It seems to be a popular choice.

  63. I’ve really gone of wordpress atm, sick and tired of it. Maybe I might change my mind when I feel like being abit creative.

  64. When it comes to finding WordPress easy to use, I wonder if anyone agrees with me that one of the factors that must be considered is the Web host? For example, a Web designer once told me that installing and running WP becomes 10x easier for those who use cPanel in addition to fantastico.

  65. I love wordpress. There are a lot of tools, themes and tweaks available. I have also noticed that wordpress can sometime problematic for SEO. Like over pinging may cause ban for a website. Though due to plugins such issues can easily avoided.

  66. Very nice guide, I love these kind of posts that organize information in one place, with so many SEO suggestions and wordpress SEO plugins being talked about all over the blogosphere its very easy to get carried away and lost. By the way, I would also add HeadSpacer2 and Redirection plugins to this list, both are very useful and clean without any additional, non needed functionality.

  67. That’s because WordPress is so easy to work with, even more so than Joomla or Drupal. It’s easy to see why it’s the current champion.

  68. The information is no doubt very useful and and rarely available collection. I was wondering for this collection, but now i got it. Thanks and congrats for such a wonderful article.

  69. PageRank is an algorithim google invented that assesses the strength of a website. The algorithim evaluates a site on a scale of n/a to 10 with 0 being the lowest/weakest and 10 being the highest/strongest. We can check our site’s rank by using a checker pagerank tool.

  70. There are two plugins for wordpress both paid and thus very effective. First is Keyword Winner which lets you choose the best keywords, low competition and optimal traffic and other scribe SEO which check keyword density. both really good for wordpress seo.

  71. I was very delighted to find this site on bing.I wished to say thanks to you with regard to this fantastic post!! I definitelyloved every little bit of it and I’ve you bookmarked to have a look at new stuff you post.Finanzen

  72. Thanks! Me as a beginner it was very useful to read and grasp information. You’ll still go, I’m sure will find many interesting

  73. What I have done in the past is put posts I wrote on my blog into several categories on my blog. I am now wondering whether that is such a good idea as the search engines might get confused. What’s your take on that – should a post just be listed in one category, or can you list it in different categories if they fit?

    1. In terms of navigation and making it easier for readers to find specific articles, it is advisable to use categories. However, if you are concerned about problems associated with duplicate contents, there are a few WP SEO plugins that could easily take care of that.

    2. I’ve always followed the advice of putting a blog post in a *single category*, and *multiple tags*.

If I’m not mistaken, that is still a valid SEO advice. Or I’m out-of-date?:)

  74. Thank you for sharing this post. WordPress is undeniably the best among the other CMS. But, please forgive me. I want to ask a question. Is it true that SEO is very important to our website/blog position in search engines? This is because, using the Google search results vary according to language and country. So, my question, how do we target market by the use of language or country?

    1. In addition, what you are looking for is called ‘local seo’. There are many ways to go about this when your target area is small and area specific. I’ll definitely think about making a post on this soon.

      1. That would be awesome! Local SEO is great for people who are just starting out, they can make good money almost immediately

  75. This is a nice and educative article Sarah, I quite agree with you on the issue of tittle and sitemap. Both are very important things that can real help in optimisation of any wordpress blog. There is lots of other plugin that can also help wordpress blog to rank very high in search engine, a good example is All in one SEO plugin, it is one of the top 5 plugin for WordPress blog

    1. Can you please provide some solid evidence for using sitemaps for SEO?
Some well respected SEOs refrain from using them. Can you comment on this controversy?

      1. Not sure about the ‘solid’ evidence Luqman can provide but using sitemaps is, in ordinary terms, a way of providing a kind of direction for googlebot such that your pages are indexed faster and that can only be a good thing.

        1. What about SEO Ultimate, have you ever used it?
because most of my blog using this plugin and only one that uses All-In-One SEO Pack

  76. No doubt, wordpress is more search engine friendly than other blogs providers. But it was a little difficult to know how to use the available features for publicizing the blog properly. Thanks for giving all the tips at one place. It’s really helpful.

  77. I have just recently heard about a plugin called “SEO Smart Links” which apparently links certain keywords within your posts to other relating posts on your blog automatically. This is exactly what you suggest we do. Do you know of this plugin, and if so, do you think it is as good as it sounds an worth installing on a WordPress blog?

    1. I think its a good plugin for generating internal links on your blog although I’d prefer to do it manually for better control.

  78. In my practice, I have found the most important points of SEO:
1st Site age. This is probably the single most important factor in Google’s algorithms. Therefore, when thinking about a new site, try to find to buy a domain name as a possible older.
2nd Put the right keywords in the description and title.
3rd Ping.fm. This is the most powerful tool of fast indexing.
4th Speed! The faster your page is loaded in the above it will be on Google.
5th Do not allow the website to “die” or “sleep”. If you run every day article, you are setting up a Google crawl every day.

  79. This is very true I am helping my friend work on his website, and we are going through the process now. I will be bookmarking this for further reference.

  80. SEO with wordpress is actually very easy, there are several plugins that make life very easy. Personally i use Platinum SEO and it has helped me rank very high for many different terms

  81. I got this post via WF and found it very useful…Thank you.
Only recently started to build websites using wordpress and its a fantastic platform.

    1. I guess he means WarriorForum (perhaps?)

Anyway, I’m using the great services from Attracta to keep my website in the major search engines and optimize the published articles.

Apart from delivering your sitemap to Google, Yahoo, Bing and other SE’s, Attracta also gives you a very detailed and up-to-date report on SEO-related changes you should make. From duplicate titles or tags to broken links.

It has been very very useful for me so far!

      1. Oh. Warrior Forum! Thanks for the clarification Sietse. I’ll give Attracta a look. Sounds like a good tool from your description.

  82. I agree about sitemaps, however, you mention not to have similar keywords that your aiming for on different pages of your site and I have to say that although I have heard this advice before, there are some times that I’ll have a site rank multiple pages for the same keyword. It may be affecting my rank for all the sites aiming for those keywords, but its impossible to know for sure. Great post, much of your SEO advice is tried and true.

  83. Those SEO tips are very helpful. There are many SEO plug ins there that webmasters can use. I personally use ALL IN ONE SEO PACK.

  84. Hi Raymund,

That’s what makes WordPress as a standout. WP has a good community of experts who are always willing to contribute/ share their knowledge to make WP the best choice for blogging CMS. I’m looking forward to see more useful plugins for us to use in the next few days.

    Cheers,
    Dave

  85. There’s some good info her. I agree that sitemaps are not that important anymore from a ranking point of view but its a more a case of “have to have it”. With a plug in its way too simple to ignore. Apart from that I think that “All In One SEO” and proper permalinks is enough optimization if you use your titles well.

  86. I agree that site maps really do help in getting the page indexed quickly by the search engines. The crawlers seem to rely and look for it.

  87. Thanks for the great information. I’ve used the All in one SEO pack but you know with Google there are always changes coming about. It’s nice to gain some insight anywhere you can with SEO. I appreciate it.

  88. There are so many plug ins for Word Press that it is so easy to get lost in them. Keep things simple is my principle. By far the most important are the all-in-one SEO or a similar one and site map. Then write good content, that’s it. Anything more is just going over the top.

  89. Thanks for the great article. I have been obsessed with WordPress for roughly 3 years now and often think back to the pain I use to have to go through building Websites back in the day.

Each WordPress update keeps on adding more horsepower and that special “something” that makes WordPress the go to CMS system for millions of people.

Absolutely love it. Great tip about sitemaps also…essential stuff!

  90. I too use WordPress for 95% of my websites and your SEO tips are bang on. I also suggest using an SEO plugin making it easier to create your meta data as you suggest. The plugin I commonly use is All in One SEO plugin. It’s free.

After that just write terrific content and promote your that excellent content and in time you can rank in the search engines.

  91. Couldn’t agree more. WordPress really does make things so much easier for us, especially with version 3.0 and upwards.

Personally I just love all the plugins that are available. The ones that help with SEO are really neat too. As mentioned by another commenter, All in one SEO is great, so are ones like seopressor which I use for making sure on-page SEO is up to scratch.

    Thanks for a great read.

  92. WordPress is awesome not only because it’s free and has so much functionality, but also because it’s compatible with Google and helps support SEO efforts.

  93. This is a very nice post. WordPress has become a very popular CMS. I am building a new site that needs a CMS and I’m leaning towards using WordPress, not only because I think it is a capable software solution, but because it has such a huge developer base.

  94. WordPress is one of the most popular CMS script around the world, it is simple to install, simple to use and simple to optimize in search engine with lots of SEO plugin available for it.

Also, there are a lot of easy to install and use plugin for SEO in wordpress. Thus, making it convenient for users in getting traffic and ranking.

  96. I use the HeadSpace plugin for title and page meta description. Another useful plugin that could help you with getting visitors to your wordpress website is the Twitter plugin. Everytime you have a new post on your blog that will also be twitted and your followers will know that something new is out there on your blog.

  97. With WordPress you enter the Do-It-Yourself world. No more waiting for and paying a programmer to fix a tiny error, saving you time and money.

  98. If you’re able to afford professional web developers create your website, request them for a WordPress site that you could eventually modify on your own. It is important that you’ve got control over your own personal website in order to create all the new changes you need quickly and also and never having to be determined by your designer’s timetable.

  99. WordPress is really the best because there are so many options with all the free SEO addons, and it is easy for the beginner to learn. I’d also greatly enjoy an article on optimizing for local search.

  102. It is very important to maximize SEO, find the fastest loading theme use the keywords wisely and all of these stuff all contribute to getting your page indexed..

  103. Great post about SEO. I have been using the All in One SEO plugin for a while now on my sites, but recently, I have been turned on to the SEO Pressor by Yoast plugin. Apparently it has more functionality.

Also remember to target keyword phrase in: title, post link(the link of that page or post), description, 2-3% kwd in content, and also within an h1 or h2 header.

And of of course, let’s not forget the internal linking architecture as well as the number of quality inbound links. SEO is quite the rabbit hole!!!

  107. I guess SEO for me is a bit of a game. I enjoy the challenge. But for someone for whom PageRank equates to money, I guess a plugin like this might be justified. For everyone else, such as me, learning all you can about robots.txt and sitemap.xml plus the All-in-One SEO is more than enough.

  108. One thing that I really love about wordpress for cms is that it is very user friendly. Well, I know not all people can be expert overnight with the wordpress control but at least it is not as complicated as other cms or open source managers. I actually tried to study drupal but I got some headache the first attempt. I also heard that wordpress is more seo friendly compare to other cms.
