Do It Yourself – Repairing the Cave-in Car Bumper

No matter if your car has been backed mistakenly in a parking lot or the pole was a little closer than you expected, the bumper of your car must have tasted the bruising. As a result, either the car bumper will cave-in or will crack. Depending on the impact, you may choose to repair or can install a new one.

You can also add the bumper covers which can change the appearance of your car at the same time offering additional protection of the bumper. Coming back to the bruised bumpers, you can consult the repair shop to find out the damage and most shops will give a free estimate about the same. Before letting them do their job, you may also choose to try a few simple “do it yourself” tips to repair by yourself.

Repairing a cave-in bumper

What you need:

  • A jack and a stand
  • Safety glasses
  • Work gloves
  • A crowbar
  • Hair Dryer

First of all, raise your car securely with a jack stand. You can now remove the splash guard which is either held by plastic clips or metal bolts. Using the dryer, you can now warm the damaged part. Use the dryer until the bumper become pliable. It may take up to five minutes to make it flexible. However, make sure you are keeping the dryer a little away from it as it may melt paint. Once you are done with heating, use a crowbar to push the bumper inside out. You will see the caved-in part is slowly pushing out as you put the pressure on the crowbar. If it is still not flexible enough, use the dryer again until it becomes pliant.

I hate taking my car to the mechanic to get repairs. I always worry that I’m going to be overcharged for the repairs needed to fix my car. I have to admit that I am not mechanically inclined in the least little bit
