5 Tips to Restoring your Home after a Hurricane

Natural calamities are things that we all do not want to ever face in our lives. However, there is no way of escaping some of the calamities that affect us. Hurricanes can be devastating and cause lots of untold suffering to thousands of people. You can have the best disaster preparedness ideas but sometimes these ideas may not work all the times.

Now, in a case where one loses their homes due to hurricanes, they may just have to rebuild afresh. It is possible for you to restore your home if the damages are not severe. All in all, one needs to be ready to shoulder the water damage restoration cost that will result in the effects of a devastating hurricane.

Here are 5 tips to help you restore your home after a hurricane:

1. Safety of the pets and your family

This is one of the things that you should prioritize after a hurricane. Take your pets and your family members into safety. Remember that the insurance company can always replace your home and other items that may be damaged by the hurricane. You want to ensure that you are safe and that all your family members are safe as well. Once safety is assured, you can call your insurance company and send photos or video of the damages. It is also possible for you to do some restoration of the home if it was not extensively damaged.

2. Prevent damages from spreading

It is possible that your home has sustained serious damages from the hurricane. The repairs of the broken parts of the home should be prioritized. If there are holes in the roof, you can call the local roofing experts to come and repair it before the damage spreads. Broken windows can also be replaced if your finances allow. Otherwise, have the windows covered so no burglars can break into the home and steal your items.

3. Fallen trees

A hurricane comes with lots of damages to trees and other free-standing structures around your home. As such, you need to remove the trees that could have fallen due to the hurricane.  You can also call emergency service providers and have them remove all the fallen trees and debris that could be around the house. This is the best step to ensure that the home is habitable in a few days after all the repairs and restorations are done.

4. Get rid  of flood water

You may want to get rid of the water immediately. This may not be possible since there will be water all over the place. For you to effectively get rid of the flood waters, you have to wait for most of the water to recede outside. Once this happens, you can get rid of the water in the basement of the house. This secures the foundation of the home. You can then sort out the water and flooding in the rest of the house.

5. Remove all the damaged content from the home

There are items and parts of the home that will be damaged beyond repair. These items should be removed so as to prevent further problems. Toys, furniture, carpets, and other damaged items should be thrown away to avoid molds. All the items discarded should, however, be documented for insurance compensation purposes.

The first floor of my house is flooded due to a hurricane that took place in our home town, that’s why I’m currently looking for a water damage service. I’m glad you shared this; I’ll make sure to inspect my home for further damages and seek help from a local roof contractor right away. I’ll also keep in mind to get rid of those damaged and wet things that may cost molds.
