How Has Video Game Technology Changed Since the 90s?

It should come as no surprise to anyone that video game technology has changed drastically over the last few years. This $137 billion dollar industry is advancing at a rapid pace, and new technology is being released every single month. Here is a quick look at a few different changes that have taken place in the video game industry since the 90s.

Online Gameplay

One of the biggest changes to the video game industry over the last 20 years is the explosion of online games. While there were a few titles that could be played over the internet in the 90s, the vast majority of games required players to be sitting in the same room. Online games are now incredibly popular, and some of the largest franchises in the industry no longer offer local co-op modes in their games.

The Monetization of Games

Game monetization software is more advanced than ever, and many video game developers have switched over to the “freemium” model. Instead of paying for the game itself, players can spend money on upgraded weapons and outfits. Other game developers regularly release downloadable content that must be purchased. Even though some of those business models have been met with resistance, everyone can benefit from them as long as they are done correctly.

Virtual Reality (VR)

Within the last few years, virtual reality technology has taken the video game industry by storm. Most VR companies are now focusing on wearable goggles with wireless controllers in each hand. In the near future, a gaming enthusiast might be able to explore expansive virtual worlds without ever getting off their couch. There is still quite a bit of room for improvement, but it seems as if virtual reality technology is here to stay.

Mobile Gaming

The mobile gaming industry is worth well over $40 billion, and that number is expected to grow in the coming years. There are now tens of thousands of mobile games to choose from, and many people spend hundreds of hours a month playing those games. Mobile games are also extremely popular among older adults who don’t play any other types of video games.

This industry is growing at an astounding rate, and it seems as if major breakthroughs are happening every other week. It is safe to say that video games play an important role in our culture, and they are only going to become more popular as time goes on.
