Types Of Broadband

It’s hard to believe that this time 10 years ago we accessing the internet through a dial-up connection and having access to the internet in your home was a rare. Now we can’t be without the internet, we’re constantly checking our phones for the latest updates on Facebook. However, with time comes advances in technology and one thing the late 2000s brought was the introduction of broadband. In 2012, there are more options than ever. Here we discuss the five main types of broadband and which one is most suitable for you.

Fibre Optic

Currently fibre optic broadband is the fastest available. A fibre optic connection will give you speeds of up to 40Mbps, with plans to increase that to 80Mbps in the near future. However, fibre optic broadband is not available nationally yet. Only the most densely populated areas currently have access to fibre optic broadband.

DSL

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is the most popular broadband and is another reliable internet connection. The main benefits of DSL are security and its ease to use. However, unlike fibre optic broadband the average DSL connection speed is 8Mbps. To receive a DSL connection you will need to have a telephone line in your property. However, unlike other broadband connections you will not need any extra hardware to access it. DSL is available nationally with most broadband providers.

Ethernet Leased Line

This is also known as a private circuit because it is not shared with any other parties. The main benefit of an Ethernet leased line is the security. Leases lines are ideal for those wishing to share information over a secure private line.

Cable Internet

A cable internet connection is a strong internet connection. The main advantage of this connection is that is available nationwide, irrespective of location. This connection is linked to your cable TV service and is always available.

Wireless Broadband

This is another great broadband connection. It is very similar to the other forms of broadband mentioned above; however it has been specifically designed for using the internet on wireless devices, such as laptops.
