Wired Connections: In with the Old, Out with the New

Look around any urban location and you will probably see a majority of people staring at screens. The convenience of Wi-Fi has led to constant on-the-go connection. Although Wi-Fi is helpful in many circumstances, people tend to spend many wasted minutes staring at a loading signal while watching their connectivity bars fluctuate. There’s especially no reason to be doing this in the comfort of your own home. A true, wired ethernet connection is the only way to guarantee consistent and reliable connectivity.

Where Wired Connection Shines

Sometimes you just have a need for speed. The lag of a slow connection can cause great frustration as you lose minutes of your day joylessly staring at a screen. Stress consumes you as your last minute PowerPoint presentation takes light-years to send between emails. Maybe you’ve had a long day and just want to kick back and stream a movie. Wired connections are particularly beneficial in many cases:

1. Speedy Large File Transfers

A wireless connection struggles to transfer large files over 1GB of data.  In fact, unless you have a completely updated wireless connection, files of at least 100MB can take loads of time to download. The connection often gets interrupted and the download freezes. Wired connections allow a direct transfer via cable that avoids radio interruption. Large files transfer within minutes.

Although Wi-Fi speeds have progressed in recent years, Ethernet can still outperform Wi-Fi on the data-per-second racetrack. Wi-Fi’s latest 802.11ac standard can offer a theoretical maximum speed of up to 1 gigabit/second, while a wired Ethernet connection can offer a theoretical speed of up to 10 gigabits/second.

2. Leisure

We’ve all spent hours watching videos on YouTube and binging on Netflix. Streaming HD video can be tricky on wireless connections. The picture often takes a while to clear into the quality you’ve requested. Buffering can seem like a lifetime, and no one wants to dedicate two hours of loading time for a half-hour show.

Wired connections offer faster downloads with HD quality. You won’t have to wait for the Netflix pixilation to clear up, and when downloading from major hosts such as iTunes, your movies will be available almost instantly. Wired connections are also ideal for video chatting with friends. No one wants to talk to a blurry, choppy face. Gamers always require a wired connection, as even the slightest ten-second lag can mean a life and death situation for your character.

3. Costs

Wired connections are much cheaper. You can get two 500Mbps wired adapters for the price of one 450Mbps wireless router. People often have to update systems and devices in order to properly cooperate with the newest wireless options. So on top of your Wi-Fi prices, you may have to spend money on improved devices for the high speeds you desire. Wired connections can guarantee you better speeds at half the price. All you need is an Ethernet cable port.

Although much of the world is run on Wi-Fi, a true wired connection provides the most direct route to your server. You can see the connecting wire with your own eyes. When you need reliability, particularly in your own home, get a wired connection and avoid the interference of the Wi-Fi world.
