Sony to Launch Own iPad

Wall Street Journal reports that Sony is working on making a new product that will challenge Apple’s iPad. The new device will combine the functions of a Netbook, Sony Reader and PlayStation Portable (PSP). Although Sony’s CFO did not provide any details, he expressed the company’s desire to remain competitive against the new Apple iPad, due to be launched in April 2010.

Furthermore, The Wall Street Journal reports that Sony is creating a new smartphone , that will make use of Sony Ericsson’s mobile technology and can play PSP games, in order to compete against the iPhone. When released, both devices are expected to work with the upcoming Sony Online Services – Sony’s answer to Apple’s iTunes store, which will sell music, movies, books, and other downloadable applications for mobile devices. However, it will take some catching to beat the Apple iPhone which boasted of over 8.7 million sales in the last quarter of 2009.

Talking Point

Do you see Apple eventually losing its dominance of the smartphone market?

Personally, I don’t think this device from Sony will be much of a success, just like their Reader, unless they decide to play nice with others. Based on past experience, the thing will still be locked into their proprietary technologies, and as such will likely fail miserably. Hopefully they choose a platform that will allow them to have a software Sony Reader along with one of Amazon’s software Kindle Reader apps. Playing PSP games would be cool, but they would also have to bring down the prices on them and allow diggital downloads of the apps/games. On iTunes, the average games is less than $5, some of the advanced games as much as $10, where the PSP games are $15-40 currently. I hope they do well as competition is always good for the consumer, but I see an uphill battle ahead.

integrating the PSP seems to be the main attraction here. However, there is absolutely no guarantee that the iPad will be a huge success as some experts seem to predict. I wonder if Sony is being led into trying to compete with Apple just for the sake of it?

i like the idea of having the psp inbuilt but the general idea of the ipad generally isn’t very attractive. The ipad isn’t actually a very good device so its not something that i would want to get, even if it comes from sony.

It will be interesting to know what features they are giving away, but i think apple had made a good name in this field, so no fear for it.

I’m not a big fan of the iPad but it is a good idea so I’m looking forward to see Sonys version of it. Hopefully it will be a little more affordable than the iPad.

You knew it would be just a matter of time before Sony would launch their own tablet. If it integrates with the PS3, it could be a winner of a product.

If this integrates with the PS3, this Sony tablet will do very well.

If they could make it a gaming platform as well as a PC this would be amazing.

Sony is a world leader but I feel when it comes to the iPad there’s none like Apple. It was the iPhone which made the crazy fans even spend the night outside the app store and the launch of the iPad was even met with a greater response. Whether its Sony, Samsung or some other famous brand Apple’s iPad has made a place of its own, the Galaxy Tab is a tough competitor for the iPad but still Apple’s iPad leads in the race.
