SEO Refresher Tips for Small Businesses

The term SEO is one that is pretty well known at this point in the internet game, but some of the basic SEO principles we all know and love can get brushed under the rug. Here’s a little refresher course with 5 reasons your small business should be paying attention to SEO.

So you’ve built an awesome website, but can’t really seem to get any traffic (other than the folks you’ve personally sent the link). How do you drive consumers to your website? Better yet, how do you make it in the top 5 of Google’s search results? SEO, Search Engine Optimization, is a huge step in the right direction. The Internet never sleeps, which means your website is always open for business. Investing in SEO can drive organic traffic to your website around the clock.

#1. Everyone’s Doing It:

While the masses have grown up being told to “be a leader, not a follower,” this is definitely not a trend you want to ignore. If you’re not making an effort to keep up, you may be quickly losing customers. Adversely, staying on top of SEO can give you a huge advance over local competitors that are not.

Say you’re a florist in Boise. Consider the keywords a consumer may use in a search to find service like yours. If you have implemented SEO on your website, your business will (hopefully) be one of the top results when searching “Boise flower delivery.” Your competitor, who has not implemented SEO, may not show up at all. More business for you!
Even if your competition has optimized their website, there SEO Competitor Analysis tools that can be used to see what’s been helpful for them, and see if it would be helpful for you, too.  Basically, you can spy on their keywords and overtake them in Google searches.

#2. Increase Exposure:

So much of business that occurs today happens online, now with more traffic from mobile devices than desktop. Once you’ve become familiar with the top search engine ranking factors, you’re well on your way to increasing your presence in the top results of search engines, helping your business gain optimal exposure.

#3. It’s Cost Effective:

While social media marketing and pay-per-click advertising may increase business, they can only be so successful without a solid SEO-centric foundation. In fact, a combination of SEO and social media marketing is sure to make you a force to be reckoned with. The better your SEO, the more likely people are to share links to your content via social media. Search engines process these shared links as backlinks. So, the more people share your content via social media, the better your SEO.

#4. Customer Insight:

Once your website is optimized and the customers flock to your website, you’ll have the opportunity to take advantage of services like Google Analytics to take a look at your customer base. You’ll learn which keywords are bringing the most traffic to your site, consumer demographics, highest activity times, desktop vs. mobile and much, much more. The more you know about your consumers, the more you can target people that may also be interested in what your business has to offer.

#5. Better Conversion Rates:

Turn clicks into customers! Consumers are searching for you. Be there when they need you. Help them find you by investing in SEO to push your way to the top of their search results (without being listed up top with the frequently overlooked ads). Generally, the higher up your website appears in search results, the more credible you’re assumed to be, resulting in more traffic driven to your page.

If these consumers land on an easy-to-navigate website with quality content, they are likely to stick around and become repeat customers.

Not quite sure where to start? Take advantage of a free website grader. You’ll receive instant feedback on how your website is performing, as well as tips for improvement. Many even offer paid access to marketing strategists that can help you kick any presenting weaknesses to the curb, making your SEO game stronger than ever.
