Easy Ways to Capture Stunning Water Drop Photos

When water droplets are created, they hardly last long enough to notice. Falling drops of water are highly elusive and capturing them in a photo is even more.

If you notice carefully, you would find that when a single drop of water hits the water surface, it creates a plume of liquid that seems to be frozen in time. It is an exceptional moment to capture. The good news is, with a little bit of practice, capturing this isn’t difficult.

Water droplets are interesting and wonderful things to frame, if shot right. In this article, we are going to take a look at the steps that you need to take in order to capture stunning photographs of water droplets.

Have the Right Equipment

The good news is, photographing water droplets does not require a horde of complex equipment. /you can achieve the feat with just a good digital SLR, a macro lens and a sturdy tripod.

The next thing you need is a system that can create water droplets by themselves. While a pre-assembled system for this purpose works best, you can also consider making one by yourself.

Choose a large dish to drip the water drop into. A colored dish is recommended since this adds vibrancy to the photos. Clean the dish off any dust particle before filling it with water since these can ruin your shot.

A medicine dropper with a soft bulb works best for water drop photography. This is because it allows you to control the pressure of the releasing droplets. Fix this dropper to a sturdy support system vertically above the bowl of water.

A Proper Setup is Essential

The distance between the tip of the dropper and the water level plays a major role in determining the shape of the water drops and their impact on the water surface. You can keep this distance between 20 and 50 centimeters for a nice splash.

Also, the depth of water in the dish will determine the type of splash that will occur when the water drop hits the water surface. For example, for a deep level of water in the dish, tall columns will be formed when the droplet hits the surface. However, you would get a crown-shaped splash for a shallow water level.

Camera Settings

Since there isn’t much you can do about the composition of the photo, you should focus on getting the water drop in the frame. Set your camera to the manual mode. You should focus your camera at the point where the water drop will hit the surface of the water. You would want the ISO setting of the camera to be pretty low. 100 would be ideal for water drop photography.

A fast shutter speed will come in handy for the water drop photography. You can choose 1/200th or 1/250th of a second for this purpose. An aperture of f10 – f14 would work perfectly fine for capturing exceptional shots since this would give you enough light and depth of field. Before taking the shot, ensure that the room is dimly lit and turn on the flash of the camera.

Get Creative

There is no reason you cannot experiment with water drop photography. To make your shots unique, you can get a little creative. You can easily get multi-colored splashes with a few tweaks. You can consider replacing water with milk and add a little bit of food coloring to it. Having colored gels in the flash can create some stunning pictures of multi-colored droplets.

You can change the viscosity of the liquid by adding soap or glycerin to it. This will impact the shape of the droplets and give your photos an interesting edge. Another method to create unique photos is by dropping one liquid on the surface of another.

You can also experiment with alternative containers like an ashtray, a spoon etc. Instead of capturing a single drop at a time, you can consider shooting multiple drops.

Keep in mind that your need to have enough patience to capture the perfect water drop photographs. In addition to that, honing the basic photography skills is absolutely essential.

If you live in Dubai, you can consider enrolling in photography classes in Dubai to refine your photography skills.
