With the popularity of YouTube videos, it does not come as a surprise that many people ask the following question – what is the best way of downloading YouTube videos on your computer? However, the availability of several video downloading software programs and websites these days have made this question a relatively easy one to answer. In order to install any Internet video on your hard drive, you can use one of the following methods;
- Download directly from the video website e.g. YouTube
- Use Add-Ons
- Install a desktop program
Downloading Directly From the Web
This is perhaps the best way to download (YouTube) videos on a hard disk drive particularly if you have a phobia for installing software on your personal computer. Due to the amount of malicious programs e.g. Trojans, Adware’s etc on the Internet, using Internet-based applications might be the only way to avoid exposing oneself to such risks. These websites allow users to simply copy and paste the URL of any video of interest, and some go a step further with options for the conversion of videos to either AVI (for Windows), MOV (for Mac), MP4 (for iPod/PSP), 3GP (for Mobile devices) or MP3 (for audio only) after which users have to either click the “Download” or “Start” button to begin installation. Examples of these Internet-based programs are Vixy, KeepVid and VideoDownloader.
Using Add-Ons
Add-Ons are programs that can be installed to a Web browser to improve and enhance its functionality. There are several browser Add-Ons that can be used to download videos directly from the Internet after installation for example, UnPlug and VideoDownloader add-ons for Mozilla Firefox, FlashGot for Flock and Thunderbird, and Orbit Downloader for Internet explorer. These Add-Ons are usually small sized and only add a small icon on the status bar of your Internet browser so that you are just one click away from downloading any video you want directly from most Websites to your computer.
Installing a Desktop Program
There are many free Web video downloaders on the Internet which can for example, download YouTube videos and Flash games fast and easily to a computer. A very good example is the Orbit Downloader which is particularly excellent for those who download large amount of files on the Internet.
