Avoid Mistakes During Responsive Web Development

Responsive web design is the need of the hour. Many businesses are shifting their websites from traditional designs to responsive format. The entire world of internet is facing revolutionary change in terms of responsive web development. However, this new design pattern is not an easy task to work with and has its own challenges. Many experienced or inexperienced IT professionals are jumping into the business of website conversion in responsive pattern but very few can achieve success. Here are some common design mistakes that can harm your online presence and reduce conversion rate too. Before launching your responsive website, you must test it for following common flaws –

Responsive Website Development

  1. Content Hiding – It is true that you can’t dump all the content from your desktop website version to your mobile version. You have to cut it down to some crisp and interesting pieces. Users shouldn’t be required to pay penalties in terms of less blocks or content when they view your website from small devices.
  2. Lengthy CSS- CSS code is the basis of responsive design. Every request and response for the website passes through CSS. It is obvious that the CSS files contain larger code which can take longer time to load. Solution to this problem is to avoid repetition wherever possible and compress your CSS files. You can also split CSS in number of files and load only required one.
  3. Page Loading Speed – Most of the times designers assume that mobile website will also work well as that of its desktop counterpart. This is not true. You must test your website on mobile devices with 2G or 3G internet connection from a remote location where speed of internet is not quite good. You can experience the frustration to wait while page is loading. To avoid, this use optimized sizes for all media components you are using in your website. Remove all un-used code and make your code clean. You can test your website with Google speed test link and check how exactly your end user is going to experience.
  4. Touch Screen compatibility – In spite of all experts yelling to start responsive design with mobile first approach, many designers start with desktop first. With this your mobile website gets lower preference and it can look cramped. Another common problem with desktop first design is many developers completely forget about the touch screen navigation. Touch screen navigation is the highlighting feature of smartphones and tablets and ignoring this in your design can crop many flaws.  Solution to this mistake is to continuously check your website on all possible devices while in building phase. Keep proper margins around the buttons and links where user can use his finger to click or tap on it.

Ultimately you have to shift your design strategy from traditional approach to a responsive one, may be today or tomorrow. However, doing this with utmost care and addressing all your potential customers is the trick of trade. If you are in the redesigning process right now, then test your website for above mentioned mistakes and curb them as soon as possible.
