Why Should I Use A VPN At Home?

A home is considered anywhere you feel protected, safe, and loved. But it may come as a shock to you that, you are not truly safe as far as you can access the internet from your home.

Believe it or not, there are snoopers everywhere who want your information for God-knows-what reasons and this is where the VPN comes into play.

This post contains reasons why you should use a VPN at home and some VPN options to consider. Read on to find out more!

What Exactly Is A VPN?

VPN is a short acronym for Virtual Private Network. It is a private network that enables a secure connection when using the internet. It gives privacy and a level of security from the third party. In simple words, think of it as a wired network where devices are connected to a server through cable. VPN works the same way, only virtually, hence the “virtual” attached to its name.

Reasons Why You Should Use A VPN At Home

There are many reasons why you may want to use a VPN at home. While it is common knowledge that many use vpn for streaming and the likes, the following will focus on some of the less common reasons for using a VPN

VPN Protects Your Data From Your ISP

The majority of us know how “not secured” a public Wi-Fi is, that’s why we have ours installed at home where we are least likely to be breached by strangers. But what about our internet service providers?

First of all, when you turn on your internet access, you are assigned an IP (internet protocol) address with which a connection is established with the internet. With this address, your ISP can keep logs of your online activities.

If your ISP can, so can hackers. But when you use a VPN, it masks your IP address or assigns a new one to ‘blind’ snoopers.

To Block Ads And Malicious Websites

Most VPN comes with their DNS (domain name system) filtering to block or allow traffic from a website.  Usually, when you enter a URL in the search bar, you don’t immediately get access to the website. Your device sends out your ISP DNS server’s domain name to check the website. If it is genuine, the DNS server returns the site’s address.

Most of the queries are sent out in plain text and are easily accessed by a third party. When you use a VPN, your DNS server is replaced by that of the network, and all query sent out from it is encrypted.

Provides Security When Working From Home

If you are working from home and want to maintain confidentiality, you should use a VPN.  When connected to the virtual network, you can freely go through sensitive data without fear of cyber-attacks. It also gives you access to sites not originally open to you.

Top VPN Providers You Should Consider

Before choosing any VPN, you should consider the following;

  • What you want the VPN for
  • The features it offers
  • Compatibility with your device
  • The region covered by the VPN
  • Paid or free VPN?

Some of the top VPN providers you should consider are;

  • Express VPN
  • NordVPN
  • ProtonVPN
