Understanding Perks Of Refurbished Computers

Finally, everything for the house has been bought, your child has their array of toys and you wish to get a computer…that is, until your vehicle went kaput. No problem, you still have cost-effective options when considering your computer purchase that won’t take away drastic value yet save you great deals of money.  We take you well into the world of refurbished computers, what’s so intriguing about owning them and some key facts about the most durable line of refurbished computers, the Acer.

What Is A ‘Refurbished’ Computer?

Your common dictionary will describe this word as ‘to furbish again, renew, or restore to good condition’.  The same applies to the world of computing as a refurbished computer is one that may have been returned by a customer, was a display model at a local store or even may have had minor cosmetic defects that were restored to new condition.  These computers are sent to the manufacturer, restored to factory settings, and resold at often times much lower prices.

What You Need To Look For In A Refurbished PC

Most people seem to initially worry about the fact refurbished PC’s will come outdated and behind in current times.  This fact is, however, totally untrue because the only way you’d purchase something outdated from anywhere would be on eBay, a place where many things are sold right from people’s closets or from closeout stores.  As long as you can take the list below and compare it to a refurbished PC, you’ll definitely be in the clear.

  • Memory: In today’s standards, 2GB is pretty much low-end of the memory spectrum and will do normal computing while allowing you to play a game online or off without slowing performance.
  • Hard Drive:  Depending on what you intend to use your PC for, lowest current hard drive space you need to accept is 80GB.  Plenty of room for pictures, music, documents and useful programs.
  • Processor: 1.5GHz processor is relative low-end and should be the least you should accept.  Intel or AMD is sufficient.  Those who plan on heavy use should take 1.8GHz dual core or above.
  • WiFi: If your chosen refurbished laptop doesn’t have at least an 802.11g/n wireless adaptor or equivalent, run: all laptops within the last 3 years will have some form of WiFi.
  • Operating System: Windows 7 is current standard.  Any computer that has Windows XP Service Pack 3 or higher will do just fine since nearly all programs and website list this as a minimum requirement.

Screen size, amount of memory and other small intricacies are relative to need.  Most families or even teenagers can Skype, play games and interact socially with requirements above.

When To Buy New Instead

Honestly, from a computer guru’s perspective, the decision to buy new instead of refurbished should fall into the hands of your budget.  The only difference between buying new or refurbished comes both between the thought you own something new and the fact you’ll get a brief manufacturer’s warranty with a new PC; even some refurbished PC’s come with at least a 90-day warranty against defects.  When dealing with the brand below, Acer, you would honestly think their refurbished PC’s were the same as new.

Acer Line Of Refurbished PC’s

The mightiest home PC and laptop line which offers excellent manufacturer’s warranties on their refurbished products is the Acer Company, famous for their Aspire line of laptops and world-class assembly of laptop products.  Some of the key benefits of owning their products are outlined below:

  • Reliable.  Acer PC’s have historically been the most reliable, quickest to boot and most stable of all other line of PC’s.
  • Affordable. Most every Acer product is well within the family budget range and, with their refurbished line, prices get really low.
  • Protectable: Extended warranties can be purchased for these products as you would with any other new PC.  Acer offers their standard warranty on all refurbished or new PC’s as the same.

Acer is simply the most sensible, reliable and affordable refurbished computer choice due to their standard of excellent and quality that’s equally put in refurbished or new computers.

I guess I will still go for a brand new unit. I guess the longer warranty is more important to me than the lower price of refurbished ones.

All I can add to this wonderful post is that instead of choosing a computer with Win7 you can choose a nice user friendly distro of Linux, Ubuntu for example, and you could spare a few bucks from your budget.

    Hi Greg,
This is an excellent argument for the ‘refurbished’ machine vs new. I believe you are right. A new computer or refurbished most likely have the same usage life, baring virus crashes, etc. And, the refurbished pricing makes most computers disposable. Thanks for the education.
