Top 6 Uses of Stainless Steel in 2018

Stainless steel is an essential part of modern life and every stainless steel supplier in the Philippines and other parts of the world would agree with this claim. Even though ordinary people tend not to notice it, stainless steel is one of the most commonly used raw material in the world. Almost everything, from the smallest utensil to the tallest skyscrapers, is made partly from this material.

There are many reasons why this is the case but it all really boils down the amazing properties of stainless steel. The material is known to resist corrosion, possess incredible tensile strength, and have an aesthetic appearance. All these qualities allow for stainless steel to be used for several applications including but not limited to:

Electronics

In this day of modern technology, one of the top uses of stainless steel is for the production of electronic and communication devices such as computers, smartphones, laptops, and tablets. The parts that make up these devices are made from stainless steel mostly because of its amazing qualities. Most enclosures and cases are also made from the material due to their durability and aesthetics.

The use of stainless steel allows for the production of high-quality products that not only deliver optimum performance but are also pleasing to look at – two qualities that are important to consumers.

Construction

Despite the passage of time, construction and architecture are still considered to be the top consumers of stainless steel. The strength, flexibility, and resistance to corrosion of the material is ideal for modern construction, specifically in the exterior cladding of most high-impact buildings. Being low-maintenance also works towards the material’s advantage since less thought and effort would be put into the upkeep of these infrastructures.

Modern construction is also leaning towards the use of sustainable materials and stainless steel is one of the best examples of this. A single beam or sheet of stainless steel is made from 90% recycled metal which means there’s less pollution involved in its creation.

Medical

The medical field is an extremely hygienic environment that needs materials that are easy to sterilize and resistant to corrosion, thus the use of stainless steel.

Surgical instruments, operating tables, MRI scanners, steam sterilizers, kidney dishes, and other medical equipment – all these are made from stainless steel. The material can also be used to create surgical implants, replacement joins, and pins and plates that are needed to keep broken bones in place.

Energy

Energy and heavy industries such as chemical, oil, and gas operate in intense and demanding environments that involve high heat and a lot of toxic substances. Not a lot of materials can be used in these situations which is why special grades of stainless steel were developed. These special materials feature better properties such as higher corrosion resistance and the ability to withstand a wider range of temperatures.

Solar, geothermal, hydro, and wind – the most popular renewable energy technologies –  also use these special stainless steels to produce components that can take on the rigors of corrosive and extreme environments.

Automotive

The automotive industry used to be a huge consumer of stainless steel, and they still are albeit a little less than before. It was used to make important components such as the car exhaust, trims, and grills because emission reduction standards and environmental concerns drove manufacturers into using stainless steel. Other forms of transportation like ship containers and road tankers also use this material because they’re great for transporting chemicals and food products.

These days, however, carbon fibers are slowly replacing stainless steel because of their high strength, lightweight, and load-bearing capacities. Although the use of carbon fibers has led to the production of vehicles with 30% less weight, they still haven’t been fully integrated by the industry.

Food

Stainless steel can also be used to make kitchen accessories, cookware, and cutlery. The less ductile ones are used to make knife blades, while the more ductile grades are molded into saucepans, grills, and sinks. They can also be used as a finish for kitchen appliances like refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, and countertops.

Food production and storage industries are also a huge fan of the materials since, as said earlier, they can be easily cleaned and that helps keep germs at bay. Since they’re corrosion resistance, they can also carry acidic foods and liquids.

Key Takeaway

Stainless steel remains to be one of the most valuable raw material in the face of the planet. The many properties that it possesses allow for the material to be used in a wide array of applications most especially in electronics, construction, medical, energy, automotive, and food. It also looks like the material isn’t going away anytime soon and will continue to be used in our day to day lives and that’s something every stainless steel supplier in the Philippines has to celebrate!
