Practicing the centuries-old art of yoga no longer requires a pricey membership in a yoga studio. With the creation of dozens of free and paid mobile apps for the iPhone, iPad and other mobile devices, getting in some warrior pose is now easier than ever before.
Many yoga mobile apps are great for everyone from a beginning yogi to a more experience practitioner. They allow users to build their own yoga flows or use standard yoga sequences. Yogis may be able to include the soothing voice of a virtual yoga instructor and play their favorite music to make the practice a bit easier.
Yoga apps designed for smartphones have come a long way in just a couple years. So grab your favorite device and a yoga mat. Here are five of the best yoga apps I’ve found for mobile devices.

This popular app ($2.99 in an online app store) features step-by-step instructions of popular yoga poses. It’s perfect for yogis who want to take their yoga practice on the road. Follow along with a built-in yoga practice or customize your practice with your own music and photos.

Simply Yoga
This app is free, but don’t let the low cost fool you into thinking it’s no good. It’s like having your own personal yoga instructor where ever you go. Select a routine and workout length and you’re on your way. You can even choose to do a complete workout or start from a particular pose in the flow.
Authentic Yoga with Deepak Chopra
This app ($1.99 online) was created by and featuring renowned author and speaker Deepak Chopra. It features plenty of video examples to demonstrate individual yoga poses, as well as customizable flows and detailed explanations of many popular yoga poses. An added bonus is the online community, where yogis and interact with their fellow practitioners.
Yoga Trainer Pro
This is another high-end yoga app that is best for experienced yogis. Comprehensive and outfitted with lots of video guides, the app walks users through both pre-set and customizable yoga flows.

Hi Myles. Thanks for commenting. I practice yoga in Southern California and found these apps to be a nice substitute for my traditional studio practice. Have fun with these and let me know which ones you find most useful, or share ones you like that didn’t make the list!
