Step By Step Guide On How To Design A Logo With Adobe Photoshop

Several essential points should be taken into consideration before the conceptualization period of creating a logo, and the work of logo design company starts with procuring such information. A logo is the much essential constituent in a company’s or a business’s image. It should speak a lot about the company, just by its existence alone. One well-made logo can speak better than one hundred pages of the company’s profile to anyone who observes it, and it must also be borne in mind that a bad logo could damage the whole image.

So, it becomes of maximum consequence that the logo has to be designed to serve the point to the maximum. We have to take into consideration the business’s type of services, type of customers, and its unique way of rendering its services. Only after examining all these points, we can arrive at the concept stage, and then only we can start the procedure of creating the logo, that is, the figure part.

The actual digital-drawing of the logo can be done with any software, like, Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, etc. In this article, we would learn how a logo can be created by using Adobe Photoshop.

In this step-by-step guide, we will be producing a simple Text Logo, with or without a supporting image.

Let us do a logo that says ‘Creation’, and let us also name this assignment as ‘Creation’.

First, The Background: Get your Photoshop, go to FILE, and then NEW. In the ‘Name’ field, type ‘Project Creation Logo’, set the width at 300, Height 100, Resolution at 72 psi, all in pixels. Keep the Color Mode RGB (8 bit if possible), the background as White, and click OK.

Now for the background, select the Gradient tool. Are you able to view the Image and Layer next to File and Edit, at the top? Immediately underneath that, you can see the Gradient Box. Click on it to edit or create a gradient.

There will be a new window appearing, named Gradient Editor, and near its base you can see the gradient bar with its color stop indents tags. Slide them right or left to get a new gradient of your choice, and then click the ‘New’ button in that window to save this additional gradient design, which you can name ‘creative’. In this tutorial, we are putting the gradient type as ‘Solid’, Smoothness as 100%, and the bottom field called Location at 30. Click the OK button now.

Again go and click on the gradient tool, and from the Gradient Editor window opt for the ‘creative’ gradient that we have already made. By the side of the Gradient Box, you can see 5 different styles of gradient selections, the central option is called ‘angle gradient’, select that.

Now, keep the cursor on the fully white Project Creation Logo’s background image box. Put it somewhere near the middle and left and click once. Holding the mouse button, drag a horizontal line to the right and let it go at the end. You would now see a pattern on the computer screen. You can of course try out a variety of patterns, by manipulating the placement and releasing points of the cursor, and also of the angle of the line drawn. We shall discuss about these afterwards, but now let us complete a simple logo design with this guide.

For now, we have produced a background for the Logo project.

Crafting the Text layer: In this step, we may bring on any custom Fonts, but in this guide we are going to use an already existing font, Century Gothic. Setting it at Regular and at 72pt, opt for Text tool, and click it somewhere inside the Project Creation Logo image file, and type ‘Creation’. This word ‘Creation’ will become a layer, so, to work further on this word we have to click and pull down Layer, then go to Layer Style.

You may create one layer each for each character, for different looks. In our simple guide we shall treat the full word as one, so we would be utilizing the entire word, ‘Creation’, as a single layer.

After punching out the keyboard for the word ‘Creation’, click the Move tool, and shift the ‘Creation’ layer to anywhere near the commencement of the angle gradient. Don’t be troubled if a part of the word is hidden by the darker part of the gradient background, it’s but normal.

Go to Layer, then Layer Style, and then go to Blending Options. The Layer Style – Blending Options window will be displayed now. Click on Inner Glow, Bevel and Emboss – Contour, right click on Inner Glow, and set up in the resulting table the following as, Structure – Blend Mode – Normal, Opacity – 75%, Noise – 0%. Below the Noise level adjustment you may see the color selection, left click on it and turn it green. In the Elements, keep the – Technique – Softer, Source – Edge, Choke – 0, size – 250. Put down the Quality adjustment as it is, don’t touch it.

We have used the abovementioned adjustments just for our tutorial, but similar to the background gradient creation you may try plenty of varieties with the controls on hand on this blending layer style window. Also, I have left the contour of the text ‘Creation’, as it is, but if you want to alter the shape to anything else you like better, pick that layer, and go to Edit, Transform, and use the settings found there.

Next comes an additional image to add on to our Text Logo. This is again an option. Here we have taken a sketch of a tree. Search out this image, the sketch of a tree figure, from any place you can, and save in your computer. Open it as another image in the Photoshop, make sure that all its outlines (vectors) are closed, and then choosing the Magic Wand Tool, take out just the outline of the tree, then use the Move tool and move it to the Project Creation Logo image. Position it anywhere you like. Here, we are placing it just like standing next to that text, ‘Creation’, as if providing it with shadow.

This layer can be referred as an additional layer, hence, you have to consider this as one and to work on it one has to go to Layer, Layer Style, and then come to Blending Options. Just do here what you have already done for the text layer, but when it comes to color, keep it as brown or something you feel proper.

You have at your liberty to try and experiment with all those controls and adjustments, and finally when you arrive at the final Text Logo image that you see right on the screen, save it, Go to Layer one more time, and Flatten Image.
