The practice of increasing a website’s visitors is known as search engine optimization (SEO). SEO is important because it determines the amount of traffic a particular website will receive from search engines. Typically, you want your website to be ranked in the top ten in order to increase the chances of getting visitors to view your web pages directly from search results.
Search Engines
Search engines such as Google and Yahoo use agents known as “crawlers” to find web pages based on certain algorithms. Several suggestions have been made as to the algorithms these agents operate on but the truth is that the search engines keep it close to their chest and change them periodically. Web crawlers are programmed in such a way that they consider various factors when crawling a given site, therefore, it is important that certain guidelines are followed in order to improve the chances of being ranked as high as possible.
SEO and SEOs
There are several ways to optimize a website and the most popular ones involve editing content and HTML codes to boost keyword relevance and remove hindrances to search engine indexing processes. The term “SEO” can also mean “search engine optimizers” (SEOs) – organisations or consultants that are saddled with the responsibility of carrying out optimization projects on behalf of their clients, for example, SEO Glasgow. They may offer their optimization services either as a stand-alone facility or as part of a broader marketing campaign.
Although, it is possible for site owners to choose the do-it-yourself (DIY) option, employing the services of one of the many SEOs available today may not be a bad either. However, if you decide to go in the direction of the likes of SEO Glasgow, it is necessary to consider the following:
- How experienced and successful is the organisation? Do they have any track records?
- What promises do they make? For example, I would think twice about using an SEO company if it promises a guaranteed number one Google ranking position in 3 days?
- Are they ready to share what SEO techniques they are going to use? For example, useful SEO tips or techniques could be those companies that offer spamdexing techniques such as link farms should be avoided as most search engines frown at these methods and may black-list your website as a result.
- Will the process involve tampering with your HTML source code, re-design and development? If yes, you have every right to know what changes are made to your site with comprehensive information about recommendations and reasons for making the changes.
Although it might take a while to reap the benefits of search engine optimization, it has the potential of driving a lot of visitors to your site in the long run. Thus, it is imperative that while choosing an SEO, one has to watch out for the unethical ones that violate industry guidelines and avoid them.
