Requirements to Earn Your PMP Certification Exam

Before you get your PMP certification, a couple of pre-requisites have to be met in order to appear for the exam and get your Project Management Professional certification. The PMI institute which hosts the test requires candidates to have met certain minimum education and professional requirements.

Your Eligibility to Apply

PMI requires the candidate to have 8 years of real-time project management experience and the institute only accepts your last eight years of relevant experience. Any candidate who may have more than a decade in project planning and executing can apply only if they have relevant experience in recent years. The professional career should span across all major PMP groups. The steps that are tested before you can acquire a PMP certification are Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling as it finally ends with Closing.

Minimum Requirements to Attend PMP

Every certification has minimum requirements whether it is a PMP Certification in Hong Kong, China or Nigeria. The minimum requirements that you need before applying for the test include a four-year degree from a reputed institute, 36 months of professional project management experience in various aspects of a project and should not overlap between different areas of expertise. You should have completed 4500 hours of leading and directing projects in this specified time frame of 36 months and 35 hours of formal project management education.

Alternatively, for those who have not a formal degree, you require a second degree which is comprised of high school diploma or an associate’s degree that is globally accepted, 60 months of proven project management experience in different fields and the areas of project management should not overlap with one another. 7,500 hours of experience leading and executing projects, 35 hours of formal project management education.

How to Submit Your PMP Application

In order to take up the PMP Certification test, you should become a member of the PMI. Head to the official website and sign up to become a member. Before you apply, make sure you have met all the requirements and have the necessary documents to prove your mettle in the project management field.

An application once created should be completed within 90 days and the necessary proof documents should be submitted before you can pay the exam fees. After you have signed up for an account, you should enter the number of hours you have worked in project management, log the PM education hours and provide certifications to prove you have completed the mentioned degree program.

The team at PMI usually processes the application and responds within 5 days of submitting your query. They will confirm whether they have accepted it to be audited to take the exam.

Examination Cost

When your application gets selected, the next step is to pay the examination cost and enrol yourself. The exam cost for center-based or paper-based testing when you sign up for PMI membership is $405. The cost for non-members is $555 and it is advisable to sign up for the membership as it will also give you access to study materials as well as a large community of professionals with strong project management experience.

The institute also offers candidates an opportunity to re-take the exam. For PMI members, the re-exam costs $275 and for non-PMI members, it’s $375. Becoming a member is the right way to go about it as it will also help you land your dream job through professional networking.

Pick a Date for Your PMP Test

After the payment is successfully made, the website will allow you to schedule your exam date for your project management certification test. Pick a convenient date and carry a valid ID proof along with a secondary ID proof in order to gain access to the exam center.

Any candidate who fails to appear on the date can reapply for a lower cost and take up the test again. With relevant experience and proper preparation, acquiring your PMP certification is an easy job and it will significantly boost your career.
