On the Process of Understanding the Need for Application Control

The unprecedented growth in the use of mobile devices along with its bundled software applications, cloud hosting platforms and internet service providers (ISP) has created a world with almost no boundaries. These mobile devices facilitate instantaneous connectivity not only between people but also between offices, establishments, and organizations. This explosive growth in communication, specifically with the use of mobile devices, is good, not only for businesses but also for the consuming public.

The Need for Application Visibility

The simultaneous use of mobile devices that include smartphones, tablets, laptops, along with the stationary personal computers (PC) creates a virtual traffic jam on the net’s “highway.” However, it is the incessant number demands of online users—for real-time connectivity using any device—that give administrators and providers a more daunting challenge to innovate.

Service providers and administrators continuously add bandwidth to alleviate the growing concern of network traffic congestion. But this additional bandwidth, however, could lead to cost and management issues. Administrators and providers can remedy this network traffic congestion by using and enhancing its current resources. Administrators and providers often need to gain the capability to address the following issues:

  • Acquiring visibility of the huge amount of applications using the net.
  • Monitoring each application’s performance.
  • Controlling the net usage for superior users’ experience.

Benefits of Network Traffic Decongestion

Gaining visibility of the applications using the net improves the administrators’ awareness on how to provide a more satisfying online experience to their clients and customers. Without application visibility, it is impossible for administrators and providers to locate, identify, and track the cause of congestion, and to monitor each application’s performance, and thus, allowing the administrators to gain enough control of the network usage.

With this greater visibility, administrators can ably track, quantify, and manage the amount of traffic, and eventually giving the administrators the power to control and direct the amount of traffic in the network. This ability to control the traffic flow of data leads to the decongesting of the network and brings about a number of benefits, not only to service providers, but also to end users as well. These benefits include:

  • Improvement on the application’s performance.
  • Enhanced operational efficiencies
  • Superior end-user satisfaction
  • Positive returns to profit

Application awareness, a component of software-defined networking (SDN), allocates traffic to any software application. Unlike the earlier hardware-driven system, application awareness resides on the software application.

At present, there are several service providers and solutions for application awareness to give administrators and ISP the capability to optimize operations and control network usage and create more room for further improvement of network providers.

In the past, internet service providers often found it difficult to figure out and rule out the origins of network congestions. Hence, it is definitely critical to get a clearer view of every movement (both network transactions and applications) to holistically address the problem of network congestions. Access solutions, provided by MSSPs and third-party solution providers are often necessary to get a granular visibility of every user, application, URL, SLA, and endpoint. Lastly, this granular visibility needs to be continuous and in real-time for it to be relevant and effective.
