Notable ways to make your Smartphone more Secure

Technology has reached our eye-lids. Security and privacy have become more critical than ever. With the penetration of technology into our bedrooms or into our very anatomy for that matter, smartphones need to be guarded like never before. In this era, your smartphone is loaded with crucial business information, private details of your personal life, critical bank account information, and much other information which might put your financial and personal privacy in jeopardy.

Being serious and wary about your data privacy and taking appropriate steps to prevent data leakage can help in avoiding a digital trespasser trying to secure and misuse critical information from your smartphone. Take a look at the following ways in which you can secure your smartphone. Equip yourself to be a responsible, smartphone user before your data security gets compromised.

1. Passcode

The most obvious choice which every smartphone user makes is restricting access to the device through a strong passcode. Fingerprint scan and facial scans are the new ways offered to improve existing security. You can always go for a way which is less complicated and has less potential to be surpassed.

2. Anti-Virus Protection

The next step towards securing any digital device is getting an anti-virus software or an app installed in it. The choice of choosing between paid and free is yours. However, I will advise you to go for paid because they offer better results. It serves as a filter or sieve which discards unnecessary files and warns you about any malware before you choose to install it. As always, prevention is better than cure; taking precautionary measures can help avoid the hassles which you have to face after data security has been compromised.

 3. Be Choosy About Installing Apps

Steer clear of apps which are not from trusted sources or unknown sources. Don’t bombard your phone with every other app which you come across as useful or entertaining. Go through the reviews and features to assure yourself about the credibility of the app. Isn’t it astonishing that many of us don’t even give a second thought before pressing OK, when our smartphone informs us that a specific app will have access to your Contact list, images, etc.? Many apps claim to be ad-free, but they install dangerous malware into the phone, approvingly although not visible. Be more attentive and keep apps that damage your privacy, by stealing critical information, at bay.

4. Always Update Apps And Your Device

Smartphone operating system providers always churn out new versions of the software. App developers keep working on the bugs and loopholes in the app to upgrade their security. Having limited space or internet availability might prevent you from installing updates. However, keeping your phone and apps in it updated at all times is one of the most important ways to secure it.

5. Encrypt the Data

The recent upgrade of security measures for the smartphone has led to the birth of one of the best security measures for data safety- Encryption. All the data that is stored on your device including contacts, emails, app information, etc. can be encrypted. One’s your data storage has been encrypted, and you can prevent the physical as well as digital hijacker from accessing critical data. All you need to do is setup encryption.

6. Keep Bluetooth and WiFi off Until Needed

Your smartphone is subject to data leakage whenever it is connected to a network. Always keep the Bluetooth feature off unless you are using to transfer data. Also, keep your mobile data and WiFi off if you are not using the internet. This will prevent hackers from breaking into the phone as it is not accessible through a network. Check if your smartphone has been wired to connect to WiFi whenever there is any network in range. Switch this feature off if it’s on. Did you know that keeping WiFi and Bluetooth also helps in saving a lot of battery? OMG, I just got a topic for the next blog post!

7. Avoid Rooting

Your smartphone may not offer all the features offered by the other latest models. However, this doesn’t confer you with the freedom to jailbreak or root it. Some users enable the developer mode and just play around the settings in the hope to get that feature on their phone. Don’t do this! You will only end up making your phone less secure. Once you have rooted it, you will lose the guaranteed official technical support. Rooting also surpasses some of the built-in security layers. All this will make your phone a vulnerable victim of malware.

8. Scan It Regularly

Some malware apps may stealthily enter your smartphone, and you may not even be aware of it. Regularly scanning your mobile helps you in identifying and eliminating viruses or malware apps from your phone. Being wary while installing is a preventive measure whereas performing scans is one more step ahead in the sense that it prevents the app from infringing upon your phone storage by uninstalling it from the phone.

9. Data Backup

Backup is necessary to avoid total loss of data or storage on your phone when physical, theft or accident happens. It’s very easy to backup all your data at a single tap with so many ways available. Google offers backup of all your images and videos on your Drive. All you need to do is wire your smartphone in such a way that all the data is automatically copied to the drive as soon as it arrives on your phone storage. Important documents, emails, messages, and other critical information can still be accessed through another device even when your phone is not there in the vicinity.

These are some of the preventive measures you can adopt to ensure that your data or smartphone security never gets compromised. Hackers and data stealers are always one step ahead whenever it comes to data theft. Being wary and taking the safety of your smartphone data seriously can help you in keeping your data shielded.
