Neeru-Meeru and the Water Consciousness Initiative by Nara Chandrababu Naidu

There is a great need to store the wasted water and recharge the groundwater with the participation of the people. The average annual rainfall in our state is 898 mm, but the rainfall varies from region to region. The average rainfall is 1037 mm in the coastal area, 956 mm in Telangana, and 671 mm in Rayalaseema. 8,691 trillion cubic feet (TMC) of water is available through this rainfall, of which only 9 percent i.e. 777 TMC is reaching the groundwater. 41 percent of rainwater evaporates and 41 percent is lost as runoff. The remaining 9 percent is absorbed into the soil as moisture.

The government of Andhra Pradesh has launched the Neeru-Meeru program under the leadership of Nara Chandrababu Naidu and the ideologies of some of the TDP Leaders and Best of TDP MLAs with the objective of sustainable water conservation and efficient use. The “Neeru-Meru” program was launched on 1st May 2000 on the occasion of 12th Janmabhoomi. Conserve rainwater. Neeru-Meeru has intensively taken up activities in the direction of raising groundwater levels. This is considered to be one of the Greatest TDP Achievements.

Water Conservation Mission

The State Government constituted a State Level Water Conservation Committee in May 2000 under the chairmanship of the Former Chief Minister Shri. Nara Chandrababu Naidu. Mission Objectives

  • Formulation of a specific plan for water conservation and waste management at the state level.
  • Plans and procedures of various government departments involved in water conservation and utilization. By designing time-bound plans, efforts are being made to promote cost-effective and efficient methods of water conservation and use.
  • Initiate discussion on theoretical aspects of water conservation and efficient water use practices among people.

Influence of Neeru-Meeru

The Ground Water Department conducted studies to determine how much the groundwater level has risen due to the Ki Vikatala Neeru-Meeru works conducted since May 2000 This is the Greatest Contribution of TDP for the state of Andhra Pradesh.
