Plans by Apple to develop 3D glasses which will make it possible for people to watch videos on the move has been revealed in a patent application, to the US Patent and Technology Office, published this month. The product nicknamed ‘iSpecs’ by technology enthusiasts, hopes to provide the same quality of experience to users as currently received in 3D cinemas around the world. Users will be able to watch their favourite programs on the iPhone or iPad in the glasses through lenses that projects images on the screen with a 3D illusion by splitting the image into two different frames for each eye.
In addition to using stereoscopic imaging, the glasses may also be made to vibrate during films to improve viewing experience. The patent application explained that the device would be fitted with infra-red sensors embedded in the frames that would detect movement or if anything approached the wearer which will pop-up a real-time video in the glasses to warn the user. Other possible additions include voice control (through an attached microphone) and head-movement control for playbacks, tuning or switching the device on and off.
Unfortunately Apple Inc. has a policy not to comment on patents therefore no one knows if or when the ‘iSpecs’ will eventually be released into the market. Meanwhile, there are already 3D glasses on the market which are compatible with the iPhone although most of these work by plugging a wire from the glasses to the device.
Talking Point
Would you like to watch high-definition 3D video while on the move?

I think it would be a great gadget if it will be launched. The users will have a nice experience using this. But for apple it will be not that easy to make a place in the market because as you mentioned there are already a lot of companies who are providing the same.

Watching movie on 3d, yes. Watching movie on 3d while on the move, not sure. I honestly can’t tell for sure if this technology is going to boom because companies have just started selling 3d tvs to the masses.

I think this may take technology and gadgets too far. I can’t imagine that these glasses could be very good looking, and why would you want to watch videos on the move? Does it mean on the bus or something?

I remember reading about this, it’ll be a great experience to do away with my ugly 3D glasses. Apple was granted a patent for a type of screen that creates not only 3D images without the need for glasses, but also holographic images.
