How to Clear System Storage in MacBook Completely

No matter how good your computer is, it can accommodate only a finite size of files. Smart management will help you to keep all the essentials. Read here to know how you can do it

If there is one company’s products that most of the individuals want and companies require to function optimally, then it would be Apple. One of the biggest tech giants in the entire world has created some truly trendsetting masterpieces. Macs are the finest computers in the whole industry and are looked upon as a must-have. Though they are expensive they are also versatile, fast, dependable and amazingly powerful. So are they a good investment even in the long run? The answer is: it depends on how you maintain it. Earlier the systems were assembled with HDDs. The hard disk drives had a physical disk spinning at great speeds and storing data in tracks and sectors. These disks were the primary storage for almost every computer and even today a lot of computer users use them.

Since the advent of advanced storage devices like SSDs or solid-state drives, we have seen the companies have started shifting from HDDs to SDDs. Though they come with a lot of advantages but they are expensive and to save on cost, companies installed low storage drives which were barely able to hold much data. Apple was among the companies that put in small drives too. So if you have a Mac and are frustrated by maintaining space then here are some tips for you to clean up the storage. These tips will work even if you have terabytes of storage and are running out of it. Have a look:

Clearing System Storage on Mac

Use cloud storage

If you are running out of space then the first and the best thing you can do is to move all the media out of the system storage. If you are not actively using the media stored then you can move them to cloud storage. You can also use an external drive for the purpose but that would cost you a lot of money. Online storage services are usually free for a small limit but users can purchase more according to their usage and budget. Mac users usually prefer iCloud to store their data but I would suggest they also check out some of the other such storages like Google Drive and Dropbox. Moving media files to such secondary storage locations not only offers more storage space but also the versatility of accessing your files anywhere and at any time. You won’t have to carry a lot of external storage units and neither have to bear the heavy costs of acquiring them.

Get rid of useless apps

There are a lot of intriguing applications and programs on the internet that are alluring enough for one to install and try out. Trying and discovering new things is not a bad idea but slowly over time this accumulates a lot of applications that are useless and they also consume a lot of resources. So another way to clean up your Mac would be to get rid of applications that are useless as well as outdated. A lot of old applications can also install malware and other PUAs(Potentially unwanted applications) which affect the integrity of your computer and data. So if you are not using them, then maybe get rid of them.

Empty out the trash

Trash is a special folder that is designated to hold all the files and folders that you delete from the primary location of their storage. Users need to delete data again from the Trash in order to permanently delete the files from the drive. This is a normal procedure and is common knowledge for all. So why is it worth mentioning? Because this procedure is so common, users tend to forget about it and then face a lack of storage issues. So if you or anyone you know is facing storage issues then ask them to check the trash folder before dialing the customer service only to later find out that the issue was nothing more than a bit of forgetfulness.

Delete Duplicates

If you think that duplicate files are a no issue then think again. Especially users who are photographers and videographers should pay close attention to this one. Duplicate files are a no joke and can seriously fill up the storage with useless files and folders. The biggest issue with duplicate files is not the storage they fill up or the ease through which they take up space but the problem of separating and deleting them is. If a user has 1000 or 2000 photos that have duplicates filled in them then you will have to go through each and one of them to see which one is original and what all can be marked as duplicates. I would suggest you take the help of a third-party app to sort them out. Manually doing it would take hours but an app designed dedicatedly for it would do it in a few minutes.

So these were some of the tips on how you can clear up your Mac’s storage and make space for new data. If you have performance issues even after you have made ample space in your drive then I would suggest you look for pending updates on the OS and make sure that your system is up to date.

Hope it helps.
