Essential Guide For Buying A New Wireless Router

A wireless router is a device which can be found in pretty much every home nowadays. Today, almost everything and everyone are on the internet. You can communicate with your family, friends and even with your co-workers through the internet. You can also make extremely important business deals or share experiences from holidays. That’s why routers are part of our lives. Consequently, it is extremely important to choose the best wireless routers for your home and your personal needs. Here are some basic information about routers that you should consider when buying a new one.

Speed ratings

Wireless routers measure their speed in megabits per second (Mbps). The newest wireless connections have data rates of about 248 Mbps and they are called Wireless n (with data transfer rates that are about 20 times faster than the older 802.11b). It is therefore important to find a router that has enough capacity to send music, videos and bigger files in a short time. Furthermore, since your internet speed depends on the range of the wireless router, it is extremely important to note the range of the router before buying one.

Single/dual band

Wireless signal works on 2 frequency bands i.e. 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz. The 2.4 GHz frequency is the lower frequency and those who use it do so for basically surfing the internet or when they have very few devices. A wireless router that uses both frequency bands i.e. 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz is known as a dual band router. Dual band routers are more expensive but their better performance more than makes up for the cost.

Signal strength

It is always important for a wireless router to have stable connections. You can test the signal and connection strength of your router through the so-called stress test. During a stress test, your router sends and receives data for up to 24, 48 or more hours none stop. A wireless router is said to pass the test if the internet connection is durable over the specified time, without any disconnection, braking or freezing. You can also check the signal strength of your router by speed testing over different distances and with or without obstacles such as walls.
