Before you design your logo, you must be aware that it is a symbol that creates recognition, trust, loyalty and admiration for the product or service. It is not merely a mark, but rather a reflection of your brand by using the right fonts, color, images and so on.
-
Be Aware of Designing Rules
You must be aware of the basic rules and principles of designing logos. Your logo must be representative of your company. You must be able to describe it. It must also be memorable and recognizable. The logo must also be equally effective even without the colors. Finally, your logo must be scalable and effective in different sizes, even in very small sizes. Your logo can be just the name of your company, but you can make it interesting by using a special typeface, rather than a boring Times New Roman 16 pt.
-
The Design process
It is important to follow the design process that consists of specific steps. You must first create the design brief and then go in for research and a brainstorming session. Next, comes the sketching part and then creating the prototype. You can review the logo and then revise it and add any finishing touches that you wish using software tools.
-
Mastery of Software
Once you have started creating the design, you can start mastering the software. There is no point in jumping straight to the computer. You can make use of software to complete the logo design after you have created an initial design or sketch. Select a good creation tool that has several features for controlling all aspects of the design. Learn to use the pixel grid, the shape building tools, the brushes for creating additional graphics. You can use software for improving visual effects with gradients in color. If you are somewhat new to such graphic designing tools, you can select a basic program.
-
Avoid Details
Try to avoid adding too many details in the illustration, as it may not be very effective when the logo is shrunk and shown in a smaller size. It will end up just being a blur and when it is repeatedly faxed and copied, the viewer will have no idea of the original image of your logo. Hence, it is advisable to go in for solid or bold shapes that continue to retain their shape or form even in a minimized form. Keep the logo bold, simple and memorable.
-
Colors
While considering colors for your logo design, be sure to ensure that the logo can also be translated into black and white. You must prepare a black and white version of your logo as well. Here, you can consider contrast, rather than gray. This is the version that is going to be used in black and white letterheads and in invoices or faxes and in other marketing pieces having one color. Using gray is a bad idea, as it does not copy very effectively and may not even show up at times. Gray also ends up using more in. Light colors in your logo can be transformed into white instead, for your black and white version.

I have the most problems with color when I design. I usually do it all in black and white and then when I start looking for colors I hit a wall and have such a hard time finding what I think looks good.
