5 Key Elements to Design a High-Quality Website
Before we proceed, I’d like to mention one thing which is that I’ve been in the website design and development industry for over a decade and during my journey, together with my team we’ve designed and developed 500+ high-quality websites for our clients worldwide.
In this article, therefore, I will help you narrow your focus on the most important 5 key elements that, when incorporated correctly, can improve the overall design of your website.
That being said, let’s dive right in!
1 – Use Responsive Hero Images
Don’t know what a responsive hero image is?
Well, you wouldn’t need to look beyond the popular website www.medium.com to see an example of a responsive hero image.
A large, responsive and meaningful hero image, as shown above, creates a strong visual experience for visitors.
In Medium.com’s case, the hero images help them encourage their visitors to scroll down and read the entire content.
Popular brands and businesses also put hero images with text or other content overlaid on top to tell a story using both visuals & text.
Take Uber Air’s hero image for example:
Whether you overlay text on your website images or not, the point is that using large & responsive hero images can help you explain about your company or brand without having to rely on written words.
2 – Card Design
Since Pinterest’s inception, designers have become fascinated with the Card Design.
Card Design, as the name suggests, is about breaking up different pieces of content into cards so that visitors can easily pick which piece of content they would like to expand and read.
This, as a result, not only increases the average time visitors spend on your website, but it also makes a website page look more clean and good.
Although, keep in mind to make your cards responsive.
For example, if a visitor selects a card to expand a piece of content, the size of other shown cards should adapt accordingly and with animation. This will increase the user experience of your website significantly.
3 – Use Hamburger Menus
You might have noticed the Hamburger menu design in mobile apps.
Although a simple Google Search will show you thousands of examples, but if you’re too lazy to do that, here’s an example image of a hamburger menu in a mobile app:
This menu design, which is most commonly used in mobile apps, has now made its way into the web design world.
Here’s a web example of Hamburger menu:
It’s called ‘hamburger’ menu because if you use your imagination, you will see that it roughly looks like a hamburger like a bun-meat-bun sandwich.
And the main benefit of using a hamburger menu is that it removes unwanted navigation and hides it behind a three-line symbol. As a result, it makes the user experience much cleaner and distraction-free.
4 – Background Videos
Background videos, videos that automatically play in the background, can add a lot of value to your website.
Using background videos, you can either reduce a significant amount of written words needed to explain your company or simply tell a story.
Here’s a perfect example:
Credencys is a web development services company, which smartly utilized background video to showcase their company space on the homepage of their website.
Videos, in general, are processed 60K times faster than written words by our brains. Hence, by embedding a background video on the homepage of your website, you can better engage visitors.
5 – Use Large & Unique Typography
Most brands and companies use large & unique typography so that their customers can easily recognize among other competitors in the market.
Typography is basically using one design trend across the entire website and indicate who you are as a company, business, or brand.
For example, you can use different kinds of fonts to express your brand accurately. Whether you’re functional or informational, fun or series, Typography can help you represent your brand or business in a better way.
Using just 1 or 2 elements from the above is not going to cut it. – It’s a total package kind of thing. Therefore, to really design a high-quality website, you must work on all of the elements mentioned above.
