How often do you think about the air in your home? Chances are that you don’t give it much of a thought unless a problem pops up. That is not a good practice, especially because so much of your health rides on the fact that the air you breathe is clean.
If you haven’t thought about it sooner, here are 10 ways to keep the air in your home clean.
1. Clean, then Clean Some More
Not to much surprise, when it comes to clean indoor air, a lot rides on the level of cleanliness in your home. You don’t have to keep everything spotless of course, but you shouldn’t let cleaning be the last thing on your to-do list either. Dust, mop, wipe and deep clean regularly and the change in the air quality will be substantial.
2. Out with the Air Fresheners
Yes, they smell lovely, but the truth is that air fresheners bring an alarming amount of damaging chemicals into your home, so they’re simply not worth it. If you want your home to smell nice, use essential oils and diffusers to make it happen, lavender oil works nicely.
3. Smoking Is a No-No
This might be far-fetched if you’ve got smokers in your home or you are one yourself, but you should still give it a try. You don’t have to quit smoking completely, just do it outside because doing it in your living space will result in a residue of harmful chemicals, not to mention secondhand smoke. Besides, everything in the house will smell of smoke and will get that sickly yellowish shade which makes everything look old.
4. Air Vents Are a Must
Good air ventilation is one of the pillars of every good home, and this is something you shouldn’t skimp on. Have an air vent in your bathroom to move the air around and get the moisture out, and having one in the kitchen is a good idea if you don’t have any windows. Open the windows in every part of your house daily, so that you get some of that much-needed fresh air in. Ceiling fans are another good idea.
5. Air Filters Everywhere
If you live in a bustling city, you better believe that having an air filter is necessary. Be it activated charcoal or HEPA filter, having a contraption that takes care of dust, smells and poison particles in the air is always a good thing. You don’t have to spend a small fortune on filters, but they will make a world of difference.
6. Himalayan Salt Lamp
There are many uses for this beauty of a lamp, and the positive effect it has on purifying the indoor air is at the very top. It will kill unpleasant odors in the room, wipe out all types of allergens including pollen and smoke and on top of it, it gives a warm light to your home, so you kill two birds with one lamp here.
7. Out with the Mildew and Mold
If you’re battling with mildew and mold in your home, you need to act fast. In fact, if the things have gone out of hand when it comes to mold, you might need professional cleaning help to exterminate it. There are plenty of services to choose from, Helpling SG being at the very top of the list that can help you with this problem.
If you decided to tackle it all on your own, get a cheap dehumidifier for your home. Having a dehumidifier will save you from dealing with breathing problems that come as the aftermath of constantly breathing in fungi. As soon as you spot mildew or mold in your home, clean it thoroughly by using vinegar, baking soda or other strong disinfectant and then crank up your dehumidifier so that the stubborn mold doesn’t come back.
8. NO-VOC Products in Your Home
Volatile organic compounds (VOC) are a serious threat to your health, which is why you should do your best to surround yourself with no-VOC products. Since these compounds can be found virtually everywhere including wall paint and different types of varnishes, check everything you intend to use in your house and make sure it’s got low-VOC or no-VOC label.
9. Completely Natural Cleaning Products
Not only are they cheaper and equally effective as store-bought, but natural cleaning products also don’t harm the quality of the indoor air. White vinegar, sparkling water, and baking soda can be found virtually everywhere – they’re cheap and won’t pollute your air and home with poisonous chemicals.
10. Know Your Radon
After smoking, radon is second on the list of poisons responsible for lung cancer. You won’t notice it on your own since it’s odorless and colorless. This gas usually comes from the ground, but there are simple tests that you can do yourself to check if you’re in danger. Better safe than sorry when it comes to radon.

It really is surprising what a difference a good dehumidifier can make and seeing the water it collects always gives a satisfying feeling that it’s being productive. However, we found that the problem of mould would still exist because we had a leak, leading in to our building. So I would just like to add the advice that you should do a thorough inspection of what could be causing damp in to your home first.

Thank you for the recommendation on lavender oil as an alternative to commercial air fresheners. I will definitely start using it more.
