Type ‘search engine’ into a search box and you will find that Dogpile.com, duckgoduck.com, Bing and Yahoo all show up before Google (By the way, this is on Google’s own search engine). Google’s homepage contains little content and pales in comparison to the excellent effort made by Yahoo with its keyword optimized content and dozens of links.

What’s The Point?

The point is that Google is still the undisputed king of search engines despite being outranked by numerous competitors. This proves without a shadow of a doubt that attaining the highest ranking is not the most important thing in the world. Instead, you need to give due focus to the process of bringing people through your website as opposed to merely bringing them to it. In other words, you need to help customers complete the task you set out on your website. This task depends on your website’s goal. For example, you may be looking to make direct sales or get visitors to subscribe to an email newsletter. Whatever it is, you will fail if the customer does not take this action.

Content Catastrophes

Type ‘SEO mistakes’ into any search engine and you will be greeted with information about content errors yet businesses still consistently make mistakes. First and foremost, you need to forget about writing ‘SEO articles’. Do a search and you will still find a host of articles and blog posts filled with keywords in an attempt to attain a high SEO ranking. This still works in some cases but what do you think will happen if a visitor comes across such articles? They will realize that the site is a blatant attempt at manipulating search engine rankings and provides no value for users.

Your mission when creating content is, and always should be, to provide relevant information that helps your visitors make the choice you want them to make. By all means, add links and include keywords but don’t do this to the detriment of the piece. Google is winning the search engine war not because it ranks the highest, but because it provides the best service and knows what its customers wants.

  1. I had never thought about it but it is true, Googles own website is not optimized. I guess the real focus of SEO should be to give quality content that converts, not just quality content that ranks.

  2. Interesting that Google ranks 7 on Google for “search engine”. But that’s not the point. Google’s users aren’t searching Google to find a search engine – they already have one! Normal companies will find a huge benefit in rising to the top of the search engine results. Being number one can generate 10 times the traffic of a number-ten position.
