Following recent concerns about the risks of sexual assaults, popular online dating site Match.com is to begin screening its users against the national sex offender register in the United States. The site which offers relationship advice and tries to make love happen by encouraging users to find and date singles in their local area was recently embroiled in what was described as “a nasty law suite after a woman, publicly identified as Jane Doe, was followed home and the man she met (a registered sex offender) forced her to perform sexual acts upon him”.
Until now, Match.com did not apply any sort of security search on its users. According to Mandy Ginsberg, president of the online singles service, the company had avoided the move for years due to the unreliability of the database but this had since improved. Therefore, (matched) users can now expect to have their names cross-checked against the national sex offender databases. However, users of the dating Website are warned that the checks ‘remain highly flawed’ in finding dangerous offenders and they should not have a false sense of security once the new policy is implemented.

Wonder how they will match the user accounts to the registry. Seems like city and name might not be enough. And will the sex offenders simply use a slightly different location to get past the filter?

I think this is a great idea. I don’t see how they can implement it without requiring a credit card or something like that to verify names and addresses.

The fact of the matter is that Match.com were forced to institute the security following the lawsuit. But as Pat mentions in her comment, the checks are far from effective and could actually lead to a false sense of security. We need to take more care out there girls.

It’s ridiculous that these issues exist in society today. Mostly, think the problem lies in the judicial system, there are many on the sex offender registry that don’t deserve to be there, and many that deserve much worse. It’s hard to label an entire group of people one way when there are so many discrepancies throughout. This is essentially robbing some of those undeserving of some of their constitutional rights.

When you meet someone on a dating website, before you make a decision to take it offline, a good way to check the person out is to look into their social media profiles and see if something doesn’t add up. Google his/her name, see if anything comes up? Think of ways to verify the person before you meet them. You may need to be a little creative and subtle with your research but it’s worth the effort in this day and age.
