Medical Technology Advancements to Rule the Health Care Industry

We are seeing so amazing innovations every day in the healthcare technology that we are forced to wonder, are health care technologies finally catching up and beginning to move with time?

Here are a few health care technologies we can look forward to.

Microchip in Use for Clinical Trial

Microchip modeling aims to replace usage of animals in the clinical trials. Do you know what is the biggest challenge met by the healthcare industry? It is nothing apart from the creation of new and effective drugs. Though significant investments are made in research and developments, the number of medicines winning approval for clinical usage is coming down. This is because the animal models that are used to predict the result do not often match with humans. The very potential of microchips to improve as well as streamline the present health care system is high. Microchips modeling clinical trials intend to replace the usage of animals thereby increasing the accuracy and sparing the lives of hundreds of innocent animals who are used as a scapegoat for the process of testing drugs.

The Harvard researchers have acquired the 2015 Design of the Year award from London Design Museum. They received this award for Organs on Chips technology which is a series of devices that made use of stem cells to mimic the different organs of the body. Several experts believe that this technology will create a revolution in the domain of individualized medicine and clinical trial.

Nanobots to Flow through the Blood Vessels

The new mini-robots are all set to flow through the human blood vessels. A group of scientists in Australia is developing a host of nanobot micromotors deft at swimming through the human blood vessels. Though they are still not in use, they would soon be available to function similar to our white blood cells, destroying bacteria and other pathogens. Don’t you think it would be amazing if used to destroy the cancer cells, carry oxygen or repair cells?

Robotic Nursing Assistant

We are not very far from the time when the patients would be attended by the robotic nursing assistants. The nursing assistant robots may be used to take care of the elderly or take complicated decisions regarding the patients. However, special care needs to be taken to develop the robots. The robots would be replacing the human nurses. Thus, the role performed by them should also be similar to their human counterparts. For example, the duty of the nurses consists of though not limited to administering medicine to the patients. At times, the elderly patients and even the kids refuse to take medicines. The robotic nurse must be programmed properly to remind the patient to take the medicine. However, the robotic nurse must be capable of taking decisions ethically. The patient may be refusing to take the medicine owing to a legitimate reason. The robotic nurse must understand the reason behind and dissuade of administering medicine in case the drug is harming the patient rather than helping him. Japan is not replacing the nurses at present but creating the robotic nurse assistants to aid with perfunctory tasks thereby allowing the nurses spend more quality time with the patients.

Artificial Retina

If the vision of an individual is or less than 20/200, United States typically defines that person as legally blind. As many as 1.1 million people in the United States are blind going by this definition. Loss of eyesight that is often caused by degeneration of retina is actually a life altering disease. A new development in this domain can help counter conditions resulting in retinal degeneration.

Holographic Images

We visit hospitals to get treatment. But a large number of people get the hospital acquired infections every year and a significant percentage of people meet death. We have seen the doctors and the nursing staff put on gloves while administering treatment to the patients. But they often touch the keyboard and the mouse with the gloves still on their hands. The mouse or the keyboard does not have any disposable cover on them either. Though these input devices are often swiped using a disinfectant cloth, proper steps are not taken to clean them properly. Holographic data input devices can bring down the number of hospitals acquired infections substantially. Though this technology is still under development, the future looks promising.

The technological advancements that are under development will transform care provided in the hospitals drastically. Let us keep our fingers crossed and wait for the time we will see the integration of these technologies in our care.
