A recent research, by TNS research firm, on online behaviour around the world has revealed that Malaysians have the most friends on social networking sites. However, the same cannot be said of Japanese users, who appeared to have the fewest number of friends. Social network users in Malaysia averaged 233 friends, closely followed by Brazil, 231 friends and Norway with 217 friends.
The study also reveals that Malaysians are also the heaviest users of social networking Web sites, spending an average of nine hours per week on them. Although this is not very far from Russians who spend an average of 8.1 hours per week and Turkish users with 7.7 hours. Furthermore, according to the research, digital sources appear to be fast becoming the preferred media channels for 61% of Internet users around the world, overtaking television, radio and newspapers.
The increase in mobile Internet access also means that users are spending more time on social networking sites than using email. For example, a third of US online consumers expect to be accessing social networks through mobile devices over the next year, compared to a quarter who cited the traditional PC.

Talking Point
How many ‘friends’ do you have on social networking Web sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter?
Social Networks are changing the Internet
So, where does the Indian lies in this study?
I have only 48 friends in facebook and about 37 in twitter.
My friend used to work for TNS. I’m sure that the research data is good.
Yeah, its true, i am Malaysian. I have almost 460 friend but i am messaging and connect with only 1++ of my friend. Others, i don’t really know them and strangers,LOL. I can say 1 day i have have 1 friend request. Most of my friend are my school and University friend.
Go Malaysia!
Better be careful, the Russians are closing the gap.
I wonder how large the sample was and the age of the sample, I’m not convinced that many teenagers were included in the survey as the majority of 18-21 year olds have 400+ friends and spend well over 9 hours a week on social networking sites!
That’s right Jason. I also wonder who has the most friends from the year 2011 since the article is from 2010.
I would also be very interested in seeing the stats from 2013. For example I know countries like Russia and others have been utilizing social media more and more. In America we seem to just check updates on the fly instead of spending hours and hours browsing.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I really appreciste
your efforts and I will be waiting for your further post thank
you once again.
