What to Look for in the Best PS4 Gaming Headsets

Are you on the hunt for the best PlayStation 4 gaming headset with the best sound quality? Or the coolest looking headset? Or the most comfortable pair? Or do you not know all of the features that come with the best gaming headset for PS4 gamers? Well you are in the right place! If you’re unsure which features you find important, or you want a more well-rounded idea, here is a list of the top features to look for when looking for the best gaming headset for PlayStation 4.

As you start your search, you will be bombarded with hundreds of different brands, functions, and models. With this much variety, you need a good idea of what your top feature will be and why it will benefit you. If you’re a competitive PlayStation gamer, the best gaming headset might be a wireless headset with amazing surround sound so you do not have to deal with dangling wires and can hear the exact location of your enemies. But if you are a PlayStation gamer who prefers co-op games, you might want a solid microphone that only picks up your voice and not any background noise. The type of game can have a major impact when choosing the best gaming headset for you.

Of course, the quality of sound matters heavily, regardless of what game you are playing. Having crisp, clear sound is imperative as some gamers listen to music while gaming and need to be able to differentiate the sounds. Beyond sound though, based on our experience, there are many features you have to decide on when picking the best gaming headset for your needs.

Wireless versus Wired

This has to be one of the biggest dilemmas gamers face when choosing a PlayStation gaming headset. They both have pros and cons that are very person dependent.

Wired headsets have a lot of positives and are pretty popular for PC gamers, they do not need to be charged so there is no limit to play time and they are generally “pick up and play,” requiring very little setup. They are also generally the most affordable gaming headsets, but we are not writing this list for the most affordable headsets for PC gamers, we are writing it for the best gaming headsets for PlayStation gamers.

So, when looking at the best headsets for PS3 and PS4 gamers, wireless headsets are the chosen favorite among console gamers. They offer the flexibility of removing it with no wires tying you down and you can get up and move easily from couch to floor or wherever you game. Another useful benefit of some wireless headsets is the fact that they can connect instantly with very little effort or setup.

The biggest issue PS4 gamers have with wireless headsets is the fact the gaming headset has to be charged if you play without a break for over 7-8 hours. If you play over 8 hours a day on your PlayStation, it might be better to consider a wired one or get a wireless headset that can double up as a wired when gaming gets too intense to take a break! Or, if you are a gamer who takes breaks every few hours, those breaks can easily give you enough time to charge your headset in time for your next gaming session.

Surround Sound

For true surround sound PS4 gaming headsets, multiple drivers are kept in each side of the earpads that enable the sound to be heard at different angles. This makes the sound very direction sensitive and lets you make out the direction from which the sound is coming. If you are a fan of Battlefield, Call of Duty, or Halo, it is extremely important to be able to have positional audio. First person shooters are one of the biggest competitive game genres for PS4 gamers so surround sound will be an important feature for their best gaming headset.

Microphones

Most gaming headsets come with a boom microphone attached that can be omnidirectional or unidirectional.

Omnidirectional microphones are a common microphone for gaming headsets. They take in noise from all directions but do have some internal noise filtering process to reduce static and background noise. If you are a streamer, or if you live with a lot of other people, you might prefer a unidirectional microphone. These will pick up sound in a specific direction so you can get clearer sound with no interruptions. Both microphone types are fairly popular so it will come down heavily to personal preference.

Alternatively, some gamers do not like the boom microphone because it can be obtrusive. There are some gaming headsets that come with smaller microphones that do not protrude out of the headset and a few that come with a lavalier microphone that can rest on your chest.

Comfort

Now, regardless of how long you play, what you play, or where you play, comfort should be a pretty important feature in what you consider the best gaming headset for PS4 gamers. Not only should comfort be a top feature to consider, it is almost one of the least considered features until after you have been playing with them for hours. Comfort is also much harder to measure since most PS4 headsets will feel the same for the first hour or so.

Overall, the most comfortable gaming headsets are gaming earbuds because they will never fatigue your ears, temples, or head. You can wear them for extended hours with no issues. These are generally not very popular for PS4 gamers or Xbox gamers as they do not have the same noise cancelling properties and, to be honest, do not look cool. Most gamers want the bigger headsets with earpads that identify them as gamers. Also, if you live at home, it helps to have a larger headset since it can indicate you can’t hear your family members speaking if they try to speak to you.

The padding of the earpads is a good indicator of the comfort you can expect. Faux leather feels nice at first but can make your ears sweaty over long periods of time. Some nice spongier mesh will not have this same issue but might not feel as nice to wear in the beginning.

The headband should gently rest on your head without crushing you and should be padded to make sure you do not have plastic digging into the top of your head. Having a lightweight headset is important for long term wear as it will get taxing over a long period of time, so comfort is extremely important.

If you cannot test out the headset in person, reading reviews of the gaming headset will be the next best bet and your ears will thank you for it.
