Kidney Infection – Symptoms and Treatment

Kidney Infection: Symptoms and Treatment

Kidney infection, sometimes called pyelonephritis, is one type of infection that is caused by bacteria or viruses. The kidneys are bean-shaped organs that remove waste products and toxins from the blood. Due to their proximity to the bladder and other urinary tract organs, the kidneys are prone to infection. If these organs’ infections are not treated, they may spread to the kidneys. Delaying therapy increases the risk of the illness getting worse.

Kidney infection symptoms

It is common for a kidney infection to spread in a day or even a few hours. Common signs of kidney infection include:

Temperature

Usually exceeding 100.4°F (38°C), a kidney infection is associated with a high temperature. Shaking, perspiration, and chills may accompany a fever.

Back or Side pain

The most common location for pain related to a kidney infection is the back, just below the ribs, on either side of the spine. Either an acute or dull ache could be experienced. It may also radiate to the lower abdomen or groin.

Symptoms related to the urinary tract include burning or discomfort during urination, frequent urination, and an overwhelming urge to urinate. Urine may appear cloudy or bloody.

Vomiting and Nausea

Some kidney infection patients may have vomiting, nausea, or both. If there is a lot of discomfort being caused by the infection, these symptoms may be especially bad.

Fatigue and Weakness

Malaise, weakness, and overall weariness can be brought on by kidney infections. You can have unusually high levels of fatigue and find it difficult to go about your everyday tasks.

Other Symptoms

In some cases, a kidney infection can cause other symptoms such as a rapid heart rate, confusion, or mental changes. People with other medical conditions or those with severe infections are more likely to experience these symptoms.

It’s important to note that symptoms can vary from person to person, and not everyone with a kidney infection will experience all of these symptoms. If you suspect you have a kidney infection, it’s important to see a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Treatment for Kidney Infection

When treating kidney infections, also known as pyelonephritis, antibiotics are typically used to kill the bacterium that is causing the infection. The antibiotic to be taken and the duration of treatment will depend on the severity of the infection and the specific bacteria involved. It’s important to follow your doctor’s instructions, even if you start feeling better before the recommended course of antibiotics is finished. In addition to antibiotics, treatment for a kidney infection may include the following:

Agony Relief

Painkillers, whether prescribed or over-the-counter, can help ease the discomfort and agony brought on by a kidney infection.

Fluid Intake

Staying hydrated and eliminating bacteria from your urinary system can be achieved by consuming an ample amount of water and other fluids.

Rest

Getting plenty of rest will help your body fight off the infection and recuperate more rapidly. If difficulties arise or, in extreme cases, hospitalization may be necessary, In the hospital, intravenous (IV) antibiotics and fluids may be administered to ensure a successful course of treatment.
