iPad 2: What Wasn’t Improved

ipad2The iPad seems to be one of those devices that comes out every few years or so and turns the tech world on its head with surprising new features, cool product design, and a jump forward in ease of use. But that was a year ago. When the iPad first came out, it was awesome. Other companies had tried to build tablet computers before, but this was something different. This was something that let you touch the internet with your finger and offered thousands of cool apps that promised to make our lives easier. In the background there were a few people saying, “yeah but it doesn’t have…” But those people were quickly silenced by the general awe of the new product.

A year later, the iPad 2 was announced and the tech world again bowed down to the Apple innovators with cool stuff like a camera and a groovy new processor. But most of the new features added to the new iPad were items that most techies already predicted and expected, and—frankly—could have been included in the iPad 1. So, what is most interesting about the iPad 2 is what features didn’t change.

Memory and Storage

One of the things that doesn’t seem to have improved is the memory. The iPad came with 256MB memory, and the iPad 2 doesn’t seem to have improved on it. The Apple website, curiously, is silent on the issue of RAM for the iPad 2. As well, there has been no improvement in the amount of storage an iPad 2 has over its predecessor. Your selection includes 16, 32, and 64 GB models, just like the iPad 1.

Screen

Also, the screen hasn’t improved at all. Originally, techies speculated that the iPad 2 might be upgraded with a cool new retina display, like it’s little brother, the iPhone. Alas, the screen resolution is no better than the original.

Attachment

Another possible improvement on the iPad 2 over the iPad 1 was speculated to be the loss of the ubiquitous white chord that keeps your iPad tethered to your computer for synching with iTunes. But that didn’t happen either. In these days of wireless everything, isn’t it about time Apple got in the game with wireless synching?

What Was Possible?

Technically, most of these improvements could have been included in the first Apple iPad, including the camera, and would have made the first launch even more spectacular. Instead Apple chose to hold out on some features that seemed like no-brainers to most of the tech world in favor of introducing a modest upgrade instead of a huge leap in functionality and speed a year later. Is Apple getting lazy? Or was this upgrade held out simply so that Apple could garner more headlines a year later without doing much work in the meantime?

I think iPad 2 went up to 512 mb of RAM.

Other than that, no new changes.

I don’t think that Apple is getting lazy, I think they’re trying to make more money. Everyone typically knows that Apple comes out with an “updated” version of a new product not long after, so Apple probably left out some features to come out with a “newer” version faster. It’s smart on their marketing end, but it’s unfortunate for the consumers who spend so much money having the latest products when they immediately come out.

I was disappointed when I saw that iPad 2 doesn’t have a Retina display. They want to make more and more money but they don’t care about what consumer need. When you put a retina display on a phone who was release in 2010 but don’t on a tablet pc in 2011 you have some problems.

They need to keep some stuff out for the ipad3.
Like they didn’t put in the camera for the ipad1 but inside it was all ready for the camera it just needed to be placed.
They will not make one great ipad now. Because they will have difficulty topping that cheaply.

Ya I agree with Angela, they hyped up the Retina display for awhile. At least I heard about it from different sources so maybe not Apple themselves hyped it up. But I for sure thought it was a feature. And not upgrading the memory? C’mon, as fast as memory evolves you would think they would attempt to include more memory.

    Hi,
as for me just one positive thing that follow by the release of the new iPad 2 is that Apple lowered the price for the first version of iPad. Otherwise, there was nothing new in iPad 2, just cool PR.
    Many Thanks

You’re right! The release of iPad2 outdated the old iPad so the later becomes more cheaper now. It’s a proven fact in some companies who market iPad here. I really want to own this iPAD 2!

Yeah, I was disappointed with the amount of memory too. You would think that would have been an obvious improvement

I wonder why they have not taken increasing RAM into consideration? As far as storing capacity is concerned, 64 GB is fair enough, and their is no urgent need to come up with something like 128 GB or so… Still, RAM should have been increased to 512 or 1 GB.

This hurts one’s expectations from iPad 2.

This is what they call: Scr*wing your loyal customers.
They know people are going to buy this.
People don’t buy an Ipad or Iphone anymore because it’s the best, because it’s not.
It’s for status. Just like some Jeans are $300 and some are $50. Yeah many of those $50 are sh*t. But there still are enough $50 dollar jeans that are at least as good as the $300 ones.
    But they miss the brand.
Pay for the label, not the product.

I agree with what you have said for the most part however would you really need any more than 64 gb of memory?

I think that an upgraded version with more memory would take off pretty well actually… you think a lot of the new apps coming out are pretty high memory and also with HD video recording it gets eaten up very quick.
