How to Perform Clean Boot Troubleshooting on a Windows PC

There are situations where you cannot determine whether the newly installed program or application is interfering with the normal operation of your computer. That’s when a Clean Boot comes in handy. Whereas loading your Windows in Safe Mode disables a good number of services and drivers, a Clean Boot starts your Windows system while disabling only non-critical services and startup programs. While performing a Clean Boot, you can activate the programs you want to test and define whether they’re causing any trouble.

If your issue prevents you from booting into Windows, you won’t be able to perform a Clean Boot. Make sure to restore the normal operation of your system before taking any further steps.

Below are the steps you need to follow to perform a Clean Boot on your Windows computer. If you want to learn how to perform a Clean Boot on different Windows versions, refer to our full tutorial at RocketFiles.

Clean Booting Procedures

To start clean booting your system, You’ll need to log in to your computer as an administrator. Hold down the “Win” key and then press “R” to open the run window. Type the command “msconfig” command into the corresponding field and click OK.

Once the system configuration window appears, select the “Services” to see a full list of services available to your PC. Scroll down the page to check the “Hide all Microsoft Services” option. Then, click on the “Disable All” button located at the bottom of your window. By doing so, you’ll disable all services except for Microsoft’s. Don’t forget to press OK for your changes to come into effect.

After that, you’ll see a pop-up message warning you that it may be necessary to reboot your computer to apply the incorporated changes. Make sure to click on the “Exit without restart” button to skip this step.

Your next step will be disabling all the programs you’re suspecting of causing a problem on your PC.

Open your Task Manager and switch over to the “Startup” tab at the top of the System Configuration window.

At this point, you need to disable startup programs one by one, since it’s impossible to disable all of them with a couple of mouse clicks. Choose the running program and select the “Disable” option. Repeat the procedure for all the enabled programs.

Once you’re done, Reboot your system

Makes sure to check if all the disabled services remain deactivated after the reboot. At this point, you may want to start troubleshooting the problem that bothered you before.

Don’t panic if your system starts giving you errors informing you of the inability to run a certain program. Such errors are commonplace, given that you’ve disabled all non-essential services.

If your clean boot troubleshooting yields satisfactory results, you can start activating the services and startup programs you’ve disabled. Don’t forget to reboot your comp once you’re done. We recommend activating one service or program at a time.

When fixing the issue, be sure to go back to the “Services” tab and select the “Enable All” option. Deactivate all services that were responsible for the problem on your computer one by one. In your Task Manager, enable all the startup programs that did not cause any problems.

Hope our guide helped fix the annoying problem and allowed you to use your Windows to its fullest potential!
