Since the release of the latest iPhone device on 24 June, there has been some complaints from users regarding loss of signal especially when holding the smart-phone by the lower left-hand corner. As a result, Apple has released its official advice for owners of the new iPhone 4 that it hopes will help in dealing with the issue.
The official advice given by Apple to iPhone 4 users, who want to enjoy the best signal strength on their device, is “to avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band” i.e. if you ever experience the loss of signal on your iPhone. However, those who are unable to avoid holding their smart-phone in that way could buy a case that will shield the antenna, according to Apple. Furthermore, an Apple statement stresses that “Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas.”
Perhaps, the reason why there has been so many complaints in relation to signal reception, particularly from left-handed iPhone 4 owners, is unconnected with the fact that the new smart-phone device is made of stainless steel, which also serves as its antenna. However, users may be glad to know that rubber “bumpers”, which shields the sensitive area on the bottom left-hand side of the phones, can be purchased from independent manufacturers as well as directly from Apple.
Talking Point
So far, how satisfied are you with the iPhone 4 experience?

What a shame ! Such a great phone crippled by such a problem. It has many features, some of them are unique, but it can’t do what it’s been made for (a phone) properly. By the way, is it true that Apple are giving away free cases to compensate users?

Great post! I think it’s pretty bad that case is required just to get a decent signal on your iPhone. What a world we’ve come to 🙂

Never held it by the lower left-hand corner to examine loss of signal. Honestly I was not aware that the problem was with the smartphone but I do not have this problem any more. It can be really annoying to experience drop calls or loss of signal.
