Features of the New Chrome 28

Google updates Chrome regularly as other Web browsers like Firefox and internet explorer. The last major update was in the version 27, which brought a new feature of Google Now-like voice search to Chrome. Their new architecture and design service however, has been named Chrome 28. This latest release of the Chrome browser adds to the ability of apps and extensions to bring up rich pop-up notifications.

Chrome-28

Chrome 28 which is now available following its release brings one major change as well as a brand new feature for both developers and users. The updated version uses the Blink engine for rendering pages. It also introduces rich notifications that had already been appearing in the beta version of the browser. These new notifications come with a unified notification center as well, although it appears to be very basic at the moment and is only available in Windows and Chrome OS. Future releases are expected to soon include both Mac OS X and Linux operating systems.

1. The New Blink Engine

Google’s new ubiquitous WebKit rendering engine appears for the first time in the stable branch of Chrome 28. At first glance, it is not a big change however, the use of the Blink engine is the most interesting feature for developers. You can head over to chrome://version to check out the version of the Blink engine yourself.

2. Improved Notifications & New Notification Center

The new notifications are the main highlight of this new release. The update allows notifications to contain richer and more content than previously possible. Support has also been added to lists and images in notifications, as well as allowing users to interact with messages for example, by allowing them to reply to an email in a notification. In addition, notifications are now placed in the Notification Center outside of the browser. This allows users to receive notifications when the browser is closed. A number indicates how many unread notifications you have at any given time and if you click on that number you will be able to see them all, one stacked over the other. Furthermore, you can review all notifications here and dismiss i.e. clear them as well.

3. Security

Chrome, version 28 also closes various security issues. It includes a richly rewarded “use-after-free” issue with network sockets and a well-rewarded fix to the infamous HTTP/SSL man-in-the-middle attack. Other bugs catered for include input handling and resource loading errors, plus an out-of-bounds read in SVG.

Conclusion

For now, the new notification system should be of primary interest to developers so that they can integrate its support in their web services and extensions; only then will users start getting the full benefits of Chrome 28. For Windows users, this will give them a notification center that is somewhat like the one in OS X, allowing them to view all their notifications from Chrome apps, extensions and web services in one place.
