Facebook has announced that it has attained the 500 million user-milestone. This is indeed a great landmark for a Website that is still less than ten years old. The remarkable achievement of the world’s number one social networking site was boosted by around 100 million new user registration in the last six months. It will be remembered that only recently, Facebook founder and chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg said that he believed the site will reach the 1 billion mark. While he might have been accused of being overly ambitious at the time, the one billion target does not appear to be impossible now.
In spite of its success, Facebook has had its fair share of competition and controversy least of which bothers around privacy and security. However, the major question remains whether the firm can maintain its success particularly in a world where changes in Internet technology and user-enthusiasm is all but too common. Perhaps a measure of the tough times that lie ahead for Facebook can be seen in other social networks such as Bebo and MySpace, both of which have been struggling recently to maintain their user base and earlier achievements.

The demographics have def. changed since I started using it, and there’s not a doubt in my mind that they will reach 1 billion as Zuckerbeg states. Interested to see how the implementation of email into facebook changes things…

If facebook has achieved the 500 million mark it means there is certainly something which is drawing peoples attention. At 25 Mark Zuckerberg has achieved what we can only dream of. As users lets just hope that whether its facebook, twitter or myspace as long as it doesn’t pollute the internet, as long as users try not to misuse these networking sites, social media will prove beneficial.

At last check, Facebook now has 750 million active users – definitely approaching the one billion mark rather quickly. I think the Facebook team has shown a remarkable ability to adapt to changes and incorporate the best traits from other social platforms (i.e. the Twitter-esque timeline/newsfeed and the ability to check in (Foursquare), which is why Facebook will be around for a very, very long time.
