Effective and Actionable Cybersecurity Tips to Implement in Your Business Today

Did you know that up to 43 percent of all cyber-attacks target small businesses? This factor alone should be proof enough that you need to implement effective cybersecurity protection.

If you are ready to take the plunge, and invest in cybersecurity for your business, then you may wonder how to get started – after all, there is so much information out there it’s hard to tell what is right and accurate and what is misleading.

The good news is, you can rely on the information here to help you protect your business from cyber threats. Keep in mind, using the services of an IT consulting firm (think the WGroup) is a great step in the right direction, you can leave your business’s well-being completely in the hands of strangers, right?

Create a Culture of Security

Even when you have implemented the most advanced technologies available today, if your employees are not properly trained, it may leave your organization vulnerable to all types of malicious attacks. When you work to create a culture focused on data security, it can help you prevent serious breaches.

To begin this effort, you need to make your security awareness training something that is mandatory for each one of your employees – regardless of their title or department. The training you implement needs to teach your employees about all the various types of social and cyber engineering attacks, but also teach them what they can do to prevent them.

Make sure to provide real examples of the most likely threats and set up “test” attacks to see if employees know what to do when a threat occurs. When your workers know how to stop an attack before it occurs, the likelihood of losses due to a cyber-attack is reduced significantly.

Create and Enforce a Cybersecurity Policy

Can you even remember when you last reviewed your policy on cybersecurity? Have you ever even created one? The fact is, just by having this type of policy in place, you can prevent serious attacks.

If you don’t have this plan in place, you need to create it. When creating it, you need to ensure that it covers the following things:

  1. How you can detect scams, which includes social engineering efforts, such as phishing.
  2. Clear and concise instructions for managing passwords.
  3. Explicit instructions regarding internet use at work.
  4. Your expectations when it comes to installing patches and software updates.
  5. Clear standards on the best way to ensure sensitive data remains safe.

Keep in mind, you can’t just have this policy. You have to make your workers aware of it. It’s estimated that up to 88 percent of current employees don’t even know their company has this policy in place. Make sure that you communicate its existence and that you offer training to help explain the various expectations related to data security, so all your workers are looking out for possible attacks.

Encrypt All of Your Data

If you want to provide your business data with superior protection, then you have to encrypt the data while it is being moved and while it isn’t. With encryption, you are essentially rendering all of your data and other information completely unreadable when it is accessed by someone who doesn’t have the proper authorization.

When you have this process in place, it helps to ensure that all your sensitive devices have been encrypted and that emails and files are sent and safe.

If you want to provide your business information and data with the most security possible, then be sure to use the tips and advice found here.
