Common Factors that Can Lead to High CPU Usage

As a computer user, you must have faced situations when your computer is suffering from high CPU usage. This not only makes your computer slow but also makes it incredibly difficult to get any work done. The slowing down of your CPU or processor may even occur when you are hardly doing anything. This can especially become annoying when you want to use your computer but cannot. By knowing the methods by which you can resolve such issues, you can stay one step ahead of these problems and make the most of your computing system.

Here are some of the most common causes of high CPU usage.

Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry high disk usage

Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry is a type of automatic service available in Windows 10. The service collects and sends different types of data from a computer to Windows development team. The data assists the development and management team to enhance the performance of Windows OS by fixing bugs. However, since it collects a wide range of data, the Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry can cover a large part of your disk space which in turn can naturally lead to high CPU usage. You can resolve the issue of Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry high disk usage by getting rid of the program from your computer. This will not only save you a lot of space but also make sure that your CPU usage is always kept at check.

The WmiPrvSE.exe process, also known as Windows Management Instrumentation, is a part of the Windows 10 OS and it helps organizations to monitor and troubleshoot numerous systems working on a single network. While it has its own uses, the process can go awry and out of control from time to time in which cases it can have a negative impact on overall CPU usage. One of the ways to detect if it adversely affects CPU usage or not is by opening Task Manager and seeing if WmiPrvSE.exe has made CPU usage considerably higher even though you are not actually running any software applications or programs that would explain such a rise in CPU usage. Such signs would suggest that the WmiPrvSE.exe is not working the way it ideally should.

A large number of processes working in the background

Background processes are programs that are running on your computer even though they are not currently open in separate windows. Generally, a computing system has a lot of processes that are running in the background at once. In fact, some of the processes are crucial for Windows to work properly. However, over long-term usage and after installing many programs, the number of background processes may increase greatly and can slow down your PC and/or increase CPU usage.

The best way to check if background processes are ruining your CPU usage is by opening Task Manager through Windows Search of the same. You can also do this by running the taskmgr.exe. This will show you the processes tab which will display overall CPU usage along with all the apps and their usage. Make sure that you do this when other programs are not open so as to prevent confusion. Check out the processes that are using a major percentage of the CPU on an ongoing basis.

System Idle Process

System Idle Process is a major factor in Windows OS that can lead to aggravated CPU usage. It is basically a thread that works to consume processor cycles that are idle and not being otherwise used. It is mainly used for supporting certain peculiarities in coding. This actually makes it an effective processor to be active when little or nothing else remains active.
