A Quick Look At iPad’s Daily Newspaper

ipad daily newspaperNews Corporation has announced the release of a digital iPad newspaper called  the Daily newspaper.  The creators of the latest digital iPad newspaper, Daily, hope the digital newspaper will open a new tablet era in which it will become an indispensable news source. The newspaper will feature news articles, gossips, interactive graphics, HD videos and lots of 360 degree photos that are designed to work on the iPad touchscreen surface. Furthermore, Twitter feeds and personalised articles are expected to be available in its content.

The Daily, which will cost 99 cents per week and sold exclusively via Apple’s iTunes store, hopes to take advantage of the projected 15 million Americans who are expected to purchase an iPad in the coming year. According to Apple’s vice president of Internet services, around 200m news apps have already been download with over 9,000 available to choose from. The paper is different from the Project, which was launched by Virgin last November; unlike the Daily, Project is a monthly style and culture magazine.

While most existing iPad news applications re-use content, the Daily will have its own editorial staff, with around 100 journalists already employed to provide device-specific exclusive content for its users. Users are expected to pay by subscriptions similar to that of The Wall Street Journal, The Times and The Sunday Times.

Talking Point

Will the Daily be able to compete with other paid-for newspaper apps such as Esquire, Glamour, Vanity Fair and Wired or indeed the free apps such as Flipboard and mediaFinder?

I think The Daily is going to make it on iPad, consider the estimated number of people who are going to purchase the iPad in US.

The Daily App is a good app especially when you can’t start a day without reading a newspaper and have a sip of morning coffee. As for me, I’ll take the coffee and skip the news! 🙂

I love the idea of a digital newspaper, considering the hard times that print journalism and industries have fallen on. However, with the other readers/pads out there, do you think they will either expand to fit all readers or will another company come up with a more universal app?

Someone has probably thought of that already. I suppose it’s only a matter of time before the market becomes saturated.
