We have had some really interesting stuff going on in the smartphone sector this year. MWC has just gone by and all the major smartphone companies have announced their flagship phones, except for Apple of course. Samsung Galaxy flagships are even ready to ship all around the world.
But, the question is what should we expect from Apple? Apple releases a major phone every two years. The rest are just updates to the base model. And this is the year a major overhaul is expected. We know that iPhone will not have AMOLED display before 2017, but as we keep our fingers crossed for the big event later this month let us go through, what we love to use them for.
However, before we go into that some perspective is always nice. The current population of the world roughly equals 7.1 Billion people. The number of smartphones stands at 1.4 billion. But, the number of total mobile devices is set to exceed the human population this year and would stand at 7.7 billion. This has been made possible primarily by Chinese manufacturers, which are providing decent phones for as low as $100.
The top usage of smartphone in the US is for staying connected with friends and family. We are not talking about calling. Social media has taken over from the traditional way. There are a total of 380 million tweets per day and this is closely followed by 370 million likes on Facebook. But, this is not all. An estimated 191 Billion emails are sent and received every day. This is more mail than USPS, one of the largest mail companies, delivers in a whole year.
Another major usage is for searching the web, a total of 140 million mobile search queries are entered daily. Google has long considered mobile optimization as a factor for ranking websites because it received almost 50% of its queries via smartphones. Even mobile payments are on the rise, with an average of $1.1 billion payments made daily.
But, when do we use the phone. You will be surprised by the findings. About 75% of Americans take their smartphone to the bathroom and 88% will use it while watching TV. On average a smartphone user will check the phone 40 times to check for news updates. And 1 in 4 people will use their smartphones to redeem a coupon code.
We know that all this is interesting, but it can be a bit tiring to read, so we have compiled all the information in a beautiful infographic, just for you:
